A few diamonds in the rough
Mask is Roger Glover's 3rd solo album -- finally reissued on CD -- and it's pretty typical mid-80's AOR (album-oriented rock) fare, but it contains two lost gems highly worthy of praise: "Divided World" and "The Mask". "Divided World" is by far the most infectious song on the album and should have received more airplay back in the day, however the slightly ominous and funky title track did get its share of airplay and rotation on MTV. "Divided World" is reminiscent of The Police and power popsters The Producers, featuring some great harmonies in the chorus. "Getting Stranger" is another lesser single from the album that is noteworthy. The rest is unfortunately not particularly engaging, including an obligatory rocker ("Dancin' Again") and some reggae-inflected tunes ("Fake It","Don't Look Down"). Still, this reissue is worth owning for the solid 3 opening songs.

I remember likeing the title track to this album when I first heard it back in the day so a couple of weeks ago standing in my kitchen 5 beer's deep at 1 am I decided to hit the purchase button for this cd.. seemed like a good idea at the time but this is pretty awful even the song mask I thought I liked is well rubish! so lesson learned, no more alcohol induced shopping ;)

Like several other reviewers
Like several other reviewers, I fell in love with the title track from the first time I heard it on the radio as a teenager. And like others I had no idea it was Roger Glover of Deep Purple. In fact, I thought it was Peter Gabriel from the use of what was then called "world music" elements and the funky bassline under droning guitars and marimba-like keyboards. I first bought this on vinyl at a used record store in Colorado when I attended a college residence hall convention, and bought a Russian CD which combined this album with an instrumental album called "Elements" even though "Elements" was not listed on the booklet/insert or the jewel tray insert. Since I'm still not sure of the dubious licensing, I cannot say whether that is a "legtimate" release and the mastering was not the best. I'm hoping the mastering is better on this re-issue,
