Does it provide any back support? If yes, how does it provide it with a soft back?

It is perfect for sitting at a picnic table where there is no back support. I find sitting at picnic tables exhausting for my back. But with this seat, I can relax.

I was thinking of using these in my classroom for second graders during reading time. Do you think it would work for them?

I can't imagine a well-behaved second grader causing any harm to these because they weigh so little, but I'm not so sure if they were to horse around in them... I have no idea how durable they are over time. I'm a "normal" sized man and broke one within the first 15 minutes of sitting in it while attending an outdoor concert.

Would this work for a 250 lb. person in the sit up position?

I would recommend another brand that I purchased for my husband. ALPS Mountaineering weekender seat. It is made real sturdy. This Coleman seat is okay, I bought it because I was looking for a black seat. So far it has been working out. Yes it would work for you, but if you want something more sturdy, check out the ALPS brand.
