The Figure in the Shadows (2) (The House with a Clock in Its Walls)

Definitely this is excellent quality reading for kids and adults to enjoy The Figure In the Shadows
This book will bring chills down your spine because of the author's own style of writing. Bellairs understands the mind of 6th graders who want to stand up to bullies in school and on the street. Of course, this book is 6th grade reading level so the book is going to be written for young children. The book also mentions a certain figure in the shadows and also about Lewis' grampa who had a lucky amulet that he won in a card game during the civil war. That's why I give this book 5 stars because of it's unique mysteriousness and excellent quality reading for young kids and adults to enjoy.

This is a classic ghost story, with magic, wizards, and shivers for all
I loved this John Bellairs original when I was a kid! Utterly horrifying, with engaging, wonderful characters and an unpredictable plotline. Rich in lore and full of the unexpected, right up to the thrilling climax.

Flip a coin…
Once again poor Lewis Barnavelt makes the mistake of casting a spell that leads to disaster, this time he activates a magic coin. As in the first book, actions have consequences. As in the first book, Lewis decides to lie rather than tell his uncle what he’s done. Hmmm, I’m sensing a pattern.A fun read, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sadly a bit of a let down
While not a bad book, it doesn't have that special spark that the first one did. Overall, I probably wouldn't read this one again as I don't feel it added much to the world, magic, or even characters. The plot was also a bit boring and poorly fleshed out.

Classic Book, One Star Off For New Artwork
I adore John Bellairs, and I have read every book he's written. The story is a great part of the Lewis Barnavelt collection and one of the original books not completed by Brad Strickland. I love the books I grew up with so I might be a little bit biased - the new artwork is...odd. There have been several artists who have done artwork for the series over the years as publishers have changed hands and the books haven been re-released. I initially liked the colorful front cover and thought this could be an interesting change up. In it's entirety it doesn't get across the spooky/supernatural tone of the story. If you flip through the book it will look like a story about bullying and fights. Lewis and Rose Rita don't look anything like the adorable 50s kids I remember. They look angry and bizarre. It just doesn't do the book justice. This is just my opinion, though! I felt like it took away from the story instead of adding to it's charm.

cosy horror for kids of all ages
This is the 1st sequel to THWACIIW now a major movie, is there any other sort ?Written in the early 1970s but set in the late 1940s, all 3 books are painfully honest about what its like to be a shy, nervy boy & a magnet for bullies. The Ghosts & Magic fit naturally into an idealised view of small-town America. The illustrations fit perfectly, matching the mix of coyness & terror.

Good read
A lovely book but I'm glad I bought it on sale. The size of the book together with large print makes the original price of £6.99 so not worth it. If I can find one book with all the stories in each story would be one chapter in normal print. That would definitely be worth buying.
