Can you remove cross-shaped filter insert if you want to drink hot soup with noodles or bits in? Would it all clog up in the neck if I don't?

Yes you can do, although I think it might need this piece in order to seal properly, it can be used without. It’s capacity equates to one mug of hot drink.
