Q: I have an ottoman which is used as a toy box but the lid slams shut so isn't the best for our young son, would these be suitable to use for this?

not to sure but you can get these items in other sizes I have used the 150 on all the top lockers in my motor home conversion and they are working fine so I would suggest you look on the internet and purchase a larger size dependant on the toybox dimentions

I did use two hinges on my cupboard overhead door. This meant I only needed one gas lift strut on one side.

Q: Can these be used for a door that opens downwards

I can see no reason why not. I used them for upward opening door.
