Our favorite
We have a lot of workbooks and this one is our favorite non-math workbook. Our 5 year old was working on some of the Brainquest books (he loves the summer ones cause they have stickers and a map :). But the reading comprehension activities for 2nd to 3rd grade were over his head (not surprisingly), and he usually struggled through the comprehension activities even in books 1st-2nd grade, although he can read quite well. This one is perfect. He can do the activities in a reasonable time, however what we like the most about these is that they build the skills and have great topics! They introduce kids to all sorts of awesome topics (history, science, health, arts, etc.) in a very age appropriate way, and they are not too long! It keeps his attention while he reads it out to us. He started working on these a year ago, and we have finished the 2nd grade book now. These books are great! We have the 3rd grade, and it looks good (but it's way too soon for him to do, although he wants it :0).What I like a lot is that It gets your child to think in a different way. It really challenges them to think more critically. I like that it is not all multiple choice (a lot of comprehension books have the same type of questions - usually multiple choice - over and over). These are more creative. I feel she really put in the effort and really thought through what the goal is for the child. They get progressively harder, but not impossible. My son enjoys these. The book is in color (which is not always the case!) and I think that helps to make it more engaging for children. It is also of high quality - nice paper quality and none of the pages fall out after every day use.I think these are great to use along with other books and workbooks. It will set your child on a great path being able to read and comprehend what they read. They will be able to express the important ideas and what they think about those ideas.

My granddaughter loves these stories
I bought this for summer fun and learning for my granddaughter and she loves it. The stories are cute and keeps her interested. She will continue to read one after another. The questions or exercises after each story make her think about what she has just read.

Great for 1st graders!
So my child is just over 6.5yrs old and entering 1st grade in the fall of 2020 who is a very strong reader. She is reading chapter books for 2nd-4th graders. I was a little worried about purchasing this book because she doesn't have a comprehension problem and while it's her grade level, it's not where she is personally while reading. Yet I wanted to get an idea of what is going to be expected/done in 1st grade and I figured I would purchase this and if it was too easy or boring I would return it for the next grade... I'm keeping it.For my daughter, this book is not hard to read nor are the activities hard to do. This is a book she can simply do on her own while I'm making dinner. The reason I'm keeping this book is because of the activities! While they're not hard for my child, they are "challenging" my child to think in many different ways and that is building both her problem solving skills and critical thinking and it's only improving her comprehension skills. Yay!Each page has a different story or concept and each page has a different activity. There are fill in the blanks, True or False, multiple choice questions, short answers, compare and contrast, sequence of events, drawings, and many many more! One of my favorites where they give a topic and your child writes what they know about it. After they spent time writing they read what is written and then they compare and see if they've learned anything new or got something wrong about it.One thing I wish was that the activities took longer to do. My child can complete a page within a couple minutes.

Well structured
This book is amazing. At first I wasn't sure if my child was understanding what was being taught and how the information was structured. As my child and I were approaching the last 15 pages of the book, my child understood the structure of the reading samples because they repeat with similar stories throughout the workbook. The book touches on informational writings, cause and effects, sequence writings, and etc. This book does need some adult guidance. It is worth getting. I wish there were more spaces to write for each lesson. First graders don't have a handle on making their writing fit within the given spaces.
