Self-Therapy Workbook: An Exercise Book For The IFS Process
J**F
Your gateway to an enriched life of self-awareness acceptance.
Laid out in a step-by-step format, with adequate space for writing my own notes. I use it in conjunction with "Self-Therapy" by Jay Earley, PhD. Internal Family Systems has helped me rid myself of early teachings that we are all basically bad. I'm learning to welcome, embrace, and celebrate all my parts, listening to their concerns and fears, coming to trust my Self, and collaborating in this journey of life.

A Geat Start
I think this book could have been structured a lot better, there is information in later chapters that really should have been in the beginning and things feel a bit disjointed and not well structured. Despite this I think it is a very valuable resource abd I've found it very helpful. However it is showing me that IFS perhaps isn't something that can be practiced alone simply because its so complex. Unfortunately I don't have anyone to practice with which really isn't great for my sense of hope in overcoming these issues. I also think it doesn't address the issue of getting and staying in Self enough, especially for those of us who can only access small parts of self or who have contact with it rarely. I'm not entirely sure what Self should feel like. It's not something I'm familiar with and yet it is so integral to the IFS processes and helping the different parts that I think there needs to be more information. So I'm disappointed about that but would recommend this if anyone wanted to start doing IFS.

Gets an extra star for IFS
Recommended by my former IFS therapist. Wasn't sure what to rate this, as it's not a bad book but I haven't really turned to it. IFS has been amazingly helpful for treating my PTSD (seriously, I never thought I'd feel like a human being again after 11 years of this) but in the end, I had to tailor it to suit my own needs and so never use the exercises in this book--I find I'm not in a place where they're usable to me. It still has a ton of useful information about in-depth IFS work and I'd recommend it to others in a heartbeat; it's just not that useful to me personally. It's far easier for me to simply forget what I'm "supposed" to be doing and sit down without distraction and sort it out with parts, however long that takes. When I started a few months ago, I didn't even know what I was feeling and couldn't distinguish parts because it was so disorganized. It was so bad even my therapist gave up, so I had to do it on my own. I'd be feeling what felt like everything possible, all at the same time, and couldn't get things to calm down. Eventually, I worked out my own way to sort things out through Self and regain my sense of agency, change, and mental creativity; I can think normally most of the time and I was so sick, so long, that it's jarring when it happens because it's a novel experience at 26, or I had simply been unable to remember thinking normally. I still deal with agitation but through this method, I know I can get better, even if it takes time and trying different things, or even forgetting what other people recommend and figuring it out myself. Some will find this book useful, some will not. Follow your gut. I think it's worth a shot for anyone considering it, because even if you're like me, you'll still take something away from it and it puts you on the path to recovery.

Very helpful
Anyone can benefit from this tool which helps us step back and recognize/work with the roles and interactions our various 'parts' have within ourselves and with the external world. A great path for healing.

A Workbook that Works
This book does exactly what it says on the tin, and is an excellent introductory workbook for anyone wishing to develop sufficient understanding of IFS to apply it therapeutically to themselves . The exercises can be worked through without professional assistance, and are helpful in indicating when professional help might be advantageous.
