Are the bristles soft? I need soft. And are they all natural boar bristles?

There are a mixture of nylon and I think boar bristles. It isn’t what I would describe as soft but it doesn’t hurt your head and it grips your hair well when blow drying. Hope this answers your query

What is the best size for hair that sits just on the shoulders?

I think that depends on the type of blow dry you want. I have the larger and smaller brushes. The larger one is good for initial blow dry and then I use the smaller one to give some curl. I have long layers and fairly thick straight hair. Hope this helps
