Not a book, just an infomercial
I got this since it was cheap. As I started to read, I realized I had already read this and in fact, at the end of the meat of the whole "book", they mentioned that this was an excerp from another book. Bascially this short publication is an infomercial on Monty Roberts and his join up technique. The first 53% of it keeps pushing this, with a little story of what the author experienced with his horses. Okay, all of us horse owners can relate--we've seen and shared special moments with our horses. The rest of the book was just references to other sources, which is helpful if you are new into horses and looking for ways to learn.*Side note--I have to comment on the whole "join up" thing. I've seen Monty Roberts and have done join up many times with horses. Pretty much all natural horseman do this in one form or another. You don't need to chase a horse around a round pen to join up. I've seen Monty and John Lyons chase horses to the point the horses are exhausted and they just give up. THIS is not relationship-building. I've done a join up in an open arena, in a pasture, even standing outside a stall of an abused horse that was so terrified of humans he wouldn't let them get close.(getting him in the stall was a major deal) The horse "joined up" with me standing outside his stall and I went in the stall with him after that. So if you are wanting to build a relationship with a horse, don't think a round pen is essential. I personally recommend Pat Parelli, have used his philosophy and techniques for years. To conclude, about this "book", you can read it in about 15 minutes and it's really not a book, just so you know.

Delightful reading!
Joe Camp is a proponent of Monty Roberts "Join up" techniques, and the director of the "Benji" films.I have read some negative comments about Monty Roberts and his ranch, so, if you are a Monty hater, don't let that put you off. If you expect this book to be totally about "Join up" techniques, it's not that either. This is a completely delightful book about Joe, his wife, his horses, his experiences training them, some "Benji" stories, and a story about a wild horse, and a native American woven into alternate chapters. This is a story about a man and his horses, his love for them, and indeed all animals, his triumphs and some failures as well.I was sad to get to the end of it, because I enjoyed this book so much.

Buy the full book!
This small book is only a synopsis of the original book- which I didn't know when purchased. But the subject is awesome, written with heart and compassion. You can read this little book in one sitting. I've purchased the full book and am eager to read it.

It's all about the horse
As a horse owner of many years I have loved all of Joe's books because they provide me with the information I need to better confirm my inclination to keep horses as they would like to be, rather than the way I think I would like to be if I were a horse! This includes being in good relationship with the horse while continuing to show my leadership. As Joe says, horses are not in love with those who lead them, nor out of love with those they lead, so as a human leader I need to balance leadership through relationship in the way horses do. I am experiencing the kind of response from my boys (no girls yet) as Joe describes and we all seem to be enjoying it.

Joe Camp is a gift to the horse!
Most of the information in this eBook was familiar to me as I've owned horses for fifty years, however... It is always heartwarming to read another person's experience. And Joe Camp tells it with such understanding and love for horses. For anyone new to the wonderful world of the horse and has the desire to see life "from the horse's end of the lead rope" this is a must read. And I strongly suggest Joe Camp's other books if you want your equine companion to enjoy life as nature intended plus always looking to you for guidance and giving you his complete trust. What a feeling that is!

Teasing the Horse Lover
I read this E-nugget as well as others from his list and liked it. However, I do wish Mr. Camp would not repeat so much from booklet to booklet. I often feel as if I have already read the one I'm just starting. I like being able to buy selectively as I have some experience with horses and want to see what someone else has to say about a particular issue. Still, his books are well worth the pittance asked.

Big promises from a skilled salesman
It is always wonderful to encounter someone who deeply loves and wants to understand animals. Joe Camp is an accomplished dog trainer which gives him an advantage over a lot of horse owners who "don't have a clue" about effective training techniques. However, Joe Camp is also an accomplished self-promoter who has chosen 2 other big ego guys (Roberts and Parelli) to learn from and recommend to others. I guess we all resonate with people who have our own values and style so I guess this is not surprising. As others have said, horsemanship is a big subject full of ups and downs--and lot's of expensive lessons. Camp's titles are appealing. They seem to hold the promise of something I would like more of. But at $6 for a book with 39 pages of fluffy prose plus links to other sources I feel ripped off. I'm afraid to trust him and buy another of his books. What does that say about Relationship First?

2stars for attitude
well, on reflection this is little more than a prolonged advertisement. i'd like to think it was an advertisement for the horse, but it's a combined ad for the author's own series of books and thebooks, and " don't forget the dvds"published by friends and i suspect business acquaintances. id like to proof that the author is not getting a commission from all those "extra special good horseman- authors that he's learned from. all this in 1.5 years of horse ownership is amazing. as a local tv program would say "scam, scam, scam".

Getting to know your horse.
This is a tiny book suitable for reading on the way to work (unless you are driving)! It is excellent and explains how a man in his sixties from Hollywood film-making suddenly gets bitten by the horse bug and has to learn a lifetime of knowledge in a few days/weeks.He is used to doing research for films and absorbing facts! But everything science tells him is diametrically opposed to the "normal" way of horse keeping. He knows Monty Roberts and starts with a trip to him and learn his methods---and it works!! It really works! So he follows up with all the American masters Pat Parelli, Clinton Anderson, John Lyons and Buck Brannamaan he watches them all studying every dvd he can get!Joe decides he HAS to share this on his website then in his famous story "The Soul of a horse". The follow up book when he tries all he has learnt on a pregnant wild mustang, comes next. Then all these little "nugget" books to isolate the most important apects are now following and worth EVERY penny of our hard earned cash!

E-book nugget
Bear in mind that this is an e-book nugget - it is just a slice of a greater book The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd. You will read this wee e-book in 15 or 20 minutes. I bought the e-book nugget because of the low price and as a nugget it was a good one.It explains the basics behind developing a good trusting, respectful relationship with your horse and how that underpins everything else. It's not rocket science however if you haven't come across the idea of natural or intelligent horsemanship it's worth a look.Actually I found as a beginner to the world of horses that the references are great, there's lots of info there, a good list of names to look for in further reading and also a good selection of websites to browse through so it was certainly worth the 49cents for the kindle edition.I have to say though that if I could have afforded it, I would prefer to have the full book and also the references included are the same on each of the Jo Camp e-book nuggets that I read.

Nice easy read but would have liked to have seen ...
Nice easy read but would have liked to have seen something a bit more in depth. To be honest I may have read just about all the main stream books on this topic so I am probably looking for something different that provides a different approach perspective. Nice little read though.
