Negative space has long been one of my favorite art principles, but one that few artists truly seem to understand or take full advantage of. So when I saw the title of this book, I was more than a little intrigued. After pouring through this book, I was left with a lasting, positive impression.Linda Kemp not only understands negative space, but she capitalizes upon it to create bold, stunning and truly unique watercolor paintings. She offers the reader a wide array of creative ideas that develop negative space into focal centerpieces, and clearly explains the various techniques used to pull them off, such as developing lively, bold underpaintings as the basis for later paintings and how to create textures that further emphasize negative space.I am very impressed with this book. While the author's style of painting is quite different from my own, and may well differ greatly from your's, she offers many fun, exciting ideas to get the creative juices flowing, keep the process exciting and bring liveliness to into any style of painting.If you want to explore exciting ways to treat negative space, and have an interest in watercolor or other water media, this is definitely the book for you.

This is truly one of the best tutorial and creative books written on how to paint with watercolors. Linda Kemp is a visionary artist and her work resonates her masterful accomplishments. It's hard to combine the technical aspects of picture making while nurturing the creative elements of painting. Linda shows the reader how to do both. She takes the student on a fundamental learning guide with her work that is understandable and achievable. She does not ignore the importance of composition and color in picture making and the book illustrates many useful design concepts that are important in picture making. Many watercolor books are filled with pretty pictures, Linda Kemp's book is a look into an accomplished body of work as well as a useful reference book for both beginner and experineced painters. A real treasure for the artist's library.

I previously revised this book. I retract my statement as there was a problem with my download. I apologize.This book tells me nothing about negative painting. Basic paint can’t watercolor information. I am disappointed .Recommend by Angela Fehr. What was she thinking other than revenue. I apologize to both Angela and Linda.

I have watched many of her free online videos - finally broke down and bought one of her books. I have been working at watercolor for 5 years. The first half or so of the book is just sort of review of things you already know if you have been working with watercolor for a year or so. There are two or three good demos in the book and many lovely photos of her work with no explanation of how she did them. As I got to the end of the book, I was surprised to find that she adds acrylic to cover shadows and negative space in paintings which I thought were all watercolor only - there is nothing "wrong" with this - but I was just sort of disappointed to see that. I wonder how many other watercolor paintings using negative space actually just put acrylic in the tiny little spaces between tree limbs. That's what I really wanted - how to work in those really difficult negative spaces - more tips on how to make that work - it is quite difficult. Mainly, I guess you have to practice a lot - and probably pay for lessons or workshops. That said, I do love many of her paintings and she does give some great advice. You can also get a lot of it for free on artistsnetwork tv and you tube. I'm still glad I purchased the book - it gave me two or three new ideas and some lovely paintings to inspire me.

I am relatively new to watercolor and open to trying new things. I was inspired to get this book because it was recommended by an artist I admire on you tube. I have enjoyed it.

First, I'm reviewing the content of the book - I've been wanting to buy this book for years since I saw some work by others that credited their technique to Kemp's negative painting technique. I was super excited to get this and check it out...After reading through the whole book I was in awe of her art but the explanation portion left much to be desired. Some artists are great teachers, some artists aren't. I love what she does with negative painting, but the lessons are so-so.Also, a warning: Don't buy books heavy on images for the Kindle. I went out and bought the hard copy after getting frustrated with my Kindle version (the hard copy is a must in this case!). Hard copies of art books are usually just a few bucks more, go with the real thing!

If you want to learn how to see painting through a different set of eyes and how to understand the term "negative painting" this is definitely the book for you. Ms. Kemp's instruction throughout the book is clear, concise and detailed. Chapters are wonderful and do not leave any dissatisfaction. This book is a wonderful hands on manual that I believe should be essential reading and practising in any intermediate painting class. And yes, the paintings do turn out the way they should when the instructions are understood.

My wife of 39 years is concerned that I, as a senior citizen, still cannot color within the lines. She has tried many things to instill a sense of order and discipline into my artistic creations. After the tragic incident with the macrame class, she re-introduced me to watercolor painting. As I cannot color within the lines, she said "To hell with it!" and purchased this book for me. She enjoys it very much and is currently using it as a reference for her work.

Endlich eine Künstlerin, die es schafft, didaktisch sinnvoll aufbauend eine spezielle Technik in einem Buch so zu vermitteln, dass man folgen und alles auch umsetzen kann. Für mich ist dieses Buch die beste Anleitung für negative painting, das ich jemals in den Händen hatte. Es ist sinnvoll in kleinen Schritte aufgebaut, setzt sich mit Fehlerquellen auseinander und zeigt mit step by step Anleitungen, wie man komplexere Bilder aufbaut.

I chose this book because I was fascinated by negative watercolor painting and wanted to learn more. From the basic to the more complicated, there are many ideas throughout the book which are taught in easy to follow lessons with lots of colorful illustrations. It's a very inspiring and well thought-out work and highly recommended for anyone who is interested in a different approach to watercoloring.
