Following the advice found in this book can only improve your team and product
Travis and Hodgson do a fantastic job setting the stage of true user experience research by identifying several popular trends that masquerade as UX. Like David Travis' courses on Udemy, the book offers highly practical advice with clear examples that teach best practices for those who are either new to the world of user experience or serve as a reminder for those who are seasoned UX practitioners. Not only is it chock-full of research-backed user experience information, but each section ends with a call-to-action for the reader to spend some time pondering what they read and acting to improve their own expertise. As the new lead of a software development team where the team has little-to-no background in user experience, I already have several practices that I want to implement thanks to this book. Particularly, the authors quote a study that states the most effective development teams spend at least two hours every six weeks observing users.Following the advice found in this book can only improve your team and product. I hold a user experience certification from Nielsen Norman Group, a bachelors of science in web design from Purdue University, and have 7 years as the lead for a university web communication team - all of that to say - this book is well worth the $50 price tag.

Incredible read, highly recommend!!
This book is one of the best UX books I’ve ever read. I’ve read through a handful of UX books and this one tops the cake! It is the most thorough and informative book hands down. I’ve learned more about UX research through this book more than my college courses and even through out my career. This book can be read straight through or casually read through on and off. It’s a FANTASTIC reference guide and it is incredibly useful to use on the job. I highly recommend this book to any one who is curious about UX research and even those who have been in the field for years.Definitely purchase the book, it will be worth it, no matter how skilled you are in UX!

UNBELIEVABLE - Incompatible with a classic kindle and cloud reader
This book gets great reviews but there are technical issues with this book that makes it sub-optimal. I can only read this book on my iPhone in the kindle app. In the cloud reader and classic kindle device I am unable to read this book. NOT GOOD

Self-described anywhere, anytime reader for those wanting to learn more or improve their UX Research
"Hmm let's see, what workshops am I holding today? Ah, a user journey mapping session with the Product Owner. I wonder if this is covered in the book for any extra pointers I haven't thought about... Yep! Page 195."This book is self-described and intended as a bathroom, on-the-go, anywhere, or anytime reader that doesn't need to be read from back to front. Flip straight to whatever topic you want to learn more about when and as you need it, but nothing is stopping you from still starting on page 1 and learning everything there is to know. If you've been an avid reader of the UserFocus articles by co-author Dr David Travis over the years, you will find some of these chapters lifted directly from those articles. However, instead of bookmarking URLs and hoping those web pages stay up forever, just bookmark them here on the convenient, physically printed copy.

I have had the pleasure of working with them and know their value from first hand experience. Their deep expertise and ability to elegantly communicate and explain key concepts is fantastic. This book is a must read for any one at any stage of their design career. If you're a people manager, buy a copy for every team member; seriously.

The best book about UX out there
As a (junior) UX professional in her 2nd year at work, I find this book so helpful in providing guidance to all the common challenges a UX practitioner sees in a company where UX is just starting. the books walks through the problems, the solutions, and more importantly, specific cases and even conversations—I read some of them more than once. I am beyond grateful to have read this book and wish it was part of the HCI curriculum at college: the discussion questions were informative and inspiring enough to be a paper prompt XD. This book creates a community!

If you’re looking at understanding or beginning to do research this is a fanatic book
I bought this book as a potential book for my ux courses that I teach. Expecting it to be a surface level beginning book I am highly impressed with the depth and breadth of the book.

The book is amazing
I purchased paper back. The papers are. Ominous off in the first read itself. After 5 mins of reading the first chapter is coming off.

Simply brilliant book about the topic. And it is not only about UX research but a collection of essays about all aspects of UX and in general problem solving. Totally recommend it for designers, researches and to people close to the field.

Gets you to think and apply concepts to your work right away
This book is great at getting you to think about how the lessons apply to your work and warn you of many of the pitfalls. A good serious beginner or mid-career overview of the UXR career. I found thos book interesting, relevant and engaging. I will read it again!

Extremely practical & well-written, highly supportive in doing awesome work & convince stakeholders
It's all about BEHAVIOUR. This is something ux researchers know, and beginners should learn as soon as possible. It's also something you often read and hear. But nowhere is the argument made as compelling and well-researched, as in this book. Because it stands out as the main theme, you move past how easy such a rule looks and have it sink in deeper, thanks to examples and arguments throughout the book. I have seen many colleagues pretend they 'know it's all about behaviour' to then perform "research" where all the participants do is speculate. From now on, I'll advice them this book. It will help to put the theory into practice, never again failing to practice what you preach. For those who want to build actually useful stuff, this book will show you how to discover true user goals, needs, workflows, challenges and unmet needs: it's here where true innovation lies hidden. And then when you think you devised a proper solution, you'll learn how to put that to the test too. Using behaviour all the time - providing the strongest in evidence. Not only will you learn how to do the research itself. Often more importantly, you'll learn what comes before and what comes after. How to discover the proper goals and scope, get the buy-in, and drive actual change for your client.I started reading with a smile after page 1, was totally psyched after the Sherlock Homes-essay, and never lost my enthusiasm, up until the end.I've read a lot of research books and essays. Often good, sometimes really good, and alas some mediocre to bad as well. This book stands at the top in terms of quality, confirming (and giving new viewpoints) of what I know and even bringing forth new approaches to what I do. Most of all, it was an extremely enjoyable read. There is a tone of voice and author identity that sometimes shows itself (not too often) and really works.Would give it more than 5 stars if possible.
