50th anniversary box set celebrating the single Space Oddity
Conversation Piece, a box set that traces the musician's artistic evolution over the course of 1968 and 1969. A must-have for David Bowie fans.

Stunning Collection
In recent years, I have been digging into the DB vaults of previously unreleased material and 'official' bootlegs. I have also heard many remastered editions of a number of artists, some okay, some great. This collection is no ordinary remaster. The book is beautiful and provides a history of his late sixties career. Included is personal correspondence between DB, his manager and record labels. I was really happy to read the notes by Tony Visconti. The book is a time capsule and dives deeply into his early career. The 5 CDs of music, remastered by Tony Visconti, are simply stunning. He's manages to pull elements out of the original tapes that provide a whole new depth. This is not a remaster where things are added or elements changed, but rather adds clarity that wasn't possible or even imagined in 1968. The collection itself, is a treasure. Yes, there is some repetition, but the newly mined material introduced me to songs and versions that I've never heard. The full album of David Bowie (Space Oddity), now 52 years old, pulled me right in. It just so happened that this purchase coincided with my new Audiolab 6000 CD transport. Conversation Piece was obviously put together with great care. It feels like a gift to his fans.

Really nice box set (not my favorite Bowie period)
I'm really happy to have this wonderful boxset, but the first Mercury LP is not my favorite Bowie period. The demos are nifty, as are the album remix. Bowie sure did like "When I'm Five", 'cause he recorded is many times! (Why did they leave off "Don't Sit Down" on the remix?) I hope they do the same job for "Man Who Sold The World", which should been expanded to include demos and the original "Holy Holy" in stereo!

As an individual who has bought all of the various David Bowie catalogue reissues of recent years, I, along with many other fans, have been left occasionally frustrated by the failings, and in some cases, the missed opportunities of the programme. 2019 was the year of a series of vinyl titles, such as 'Spying Through A Keyhole', that were overpriced and frankly took the fanbase for a bit of a ride. I was trepidatious about buying 'Conversation Piece', therefore, having swerved the 2019 vinyl releases for the most part - but I am thrilled to say that 'Conversation Piece' really does do full justice to David Bowie's developing talent in the late sixties, and also delivers as a well thought out, beautifully packaged release. I have always loved the 'Soace Oddity' album, and the title track in particular, but Tony Visconti's remix (he never liked the original 'Space Oddity' track, and left that to Gus Dudgeon to produce) has revealed new depths, sound colour and deft production flourishes which shed some sonic illumination on the orginal album. Put this with the sumptuous hard back book, and the other discs of demos, radio sessions and mono takes, and you will be simply floored by the excellence herein. Bowie was still trying to find a suitable style, following on from the Anthny Newley-isms of his Deram debut album, and the folkier material (already featuring some of Bowie's trademark unusual chord progressions) of the 'Hutch' demos offers the listener some tantalising missteps and blind alleys to be enjoyed a half-century later. Plus, as others have said, the title track, 'Conversation Piece', is one of Bowie's very finest of his early tracks, and is finally restored to it's rightful place on the album. I do hope that my favourite Bowie album - 'The Man Who Sold The World', which is fifty years old this year - is given the 'Conversation Piece' treatment!
