Is there a cover for the blade I can purchase? I don’t want to mount it to the tree stump until I can do so safely.

The 1/4 inch thick "blade" isn't sharpened so there's not much fear of a person cutting themselves on it. It could be sharpened by the buyer but it splits firewood just fine as purchased. The blade is really a wedge that you drive the log against with a weighty hammer or mini-sledge.

They appear to be 3/8" in diameter, but the splitter is quite heavy and isstable, free standing on a level spot. I haven't had any need to mount it on something.
