Seems like every tool has a built-in wire stripper these days. Crimpers and pliers, I even have a pair of scissors with one. And they're all pretty crummy strippers, too.This tool does one thing, and it does it very well. It can strip a wire using only one hand, so your other hand can hold the wire. After the cut, it flicks off the insulation in one smooth motion, which eliminates wrestling with the wire to get the tip off.It also has a very wide range of gauges that it can do, and it is easy to compare the wire tip with the holes to find the right one. For example, sometimes a 18 gauge stranded wire is "fluffier" than usual, and needs the 16 gauge hole. Even if you guess wrong and use the larger hole, it is easy to put the wire back in and do it again one smaller.There is one disadvantage, which is that it flicks the insulation end off onto the floor. This is kind of fun while you're doing it, but then you'll end up crouching down and trying to find them after it is over (or vacuuming, if you've been doing a bunch of them). This wire stripper makes repetitive stripping a breeze. I injured one hand and bought this as a get-by while it healed, but this is now my GO-TO tool. I have one on the bench and one in the tool pouch for working out of the shop.Just pick a hole that will come close to matching the copper size without pinching the copper. Strips clean w/out damage to the conductor. Other strippers (especially the ones that bite insulation w/two parallel jaws instead of round holes) will pinch copper & damage the conductor; not this unit. At first I tried to match the print on the jaw to conductor size, but eye-balling it is easier, faster & a better result. If I choose an oversized hole, it jsut tears the insulation the rest of the way thru where it didn't cut, making a clean end ready for termination.Insulation tips just drop off when you release, or you can direct them to a waste basket if the site needs to stay tidy. Handles are comfortable enough to work all day. Will take some minor oiling after a lot of use, or storage outside where it is damp, but that's true w/any tool. At less than $20 this thing is a steal; screwing around w/cheaper tools is for rookies.

I was impressed by this wire stripper. I have never used one like it and think it is just the coolest deal ever. Great quality. Solid unit. The only flaw is that I got it to strip some 8 AWG wire and it does sometimes cut a few strands. Nothing big and still very pleased to use it. I would If your looking for a wire stripper like this I would highly recommend it. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is because its kind of difficult fitting the 8 AWG cable into this. if the jaws could open up just ever so slightly more to accept the 8 AWG cable it would be perfect.

Like others I found this did not work at all. One jaw is supposed to clamp the wire while the other cuts the wire's casing. It does not clamp, so the subsequent pull just moves the wire further, leaving the casing scarred but still attached to the wire. That some have found this device work well suggests that the manufacturer's quality control is poor.

This Works excellent for wires that have soft or softer outer sleeves. 70% of the time it works every time. I use these mostly to do radio installs and car wiring. On some of the thicker gauged wire that is older or the cable sleeve has dried up these have a slightly harder time working. I actually broke my last pair from trying to strip some older (8 gauge) wire in my engine bay. The handle broke from too much force and no movement of the wire sleeve. The tool frame is cast aluminium so it isn't indestructible but it is really a helpful tool for anyone working with lots of wires that need to be stripped quickly (ex:custom engine harnesses/ sound system installs)

I already own a pair from years ago and have continued to use them but wanted a second pair for a dedicated electrical toolkit. I definitely prefer this type of mechanism for stripping wires over other types.

I like this style of wire stripper. This is my second set of GB wire stripper. One for the electronics lab, one for the garage.

These auto-strippers seem to be all the same, but they're not. I had one just like this from radioshack that I bought when I was a kid and used for nearly 20 years before it finally wore out. This was supposed to replace that, but I was disappointed to see the "dies" (the two sliding cutting teeth) were very poorly ground, resulting in undersized holes that will nick solid and break strands. For a professional, this is unacceptable I ended up returning this and getting the blue handled Klein. I was able to look at all three (my original one from 20years ago), the GB, and the Klein at the same time to compare the cutting dies. The original RadioShack one was pretty good, this GB was absolutely identical to the original except for the poorly sized dies (so I could have swapped in my original dies if I really wanted to). However, the Klein that I ended up keeping has an even better grip and super precise dies that cut without nicking. I have several other Gardner Bender tools and they are usually fine, and this may have been just one of a few from a bad lot, so I'm giving it two stars and recommending the Klein strippers instead. I hope they can get this very singular quality control issue fixed. GB is otherwise a fine company.
