why not get more filters??
OVERALLGet a box. Don't be cheap (like I was). Abandon $3-4 coffees at Starbucks and make something better at your house with a clean machine.MY STORYI live in a place where the water is fine. Taste is good and you can drink it out of the tap without worrying. For some reason, I have been lazy about the maintenance of my Cuisinart coffee machine even though it's one of the most utilized and important machines in my daily life (besides my computer).MY OPINIONFor anybody wondering whether to pick up these charcoal water filters, do it! I waited far too long. When I looked at the one I had in my machine, it was VERY nasty. These replacements are quite cheap. I bought a pair, cleaned out the machine, ran through a cycle of vinegar and water (which I had never done), and stuck in a new filter. The coffee was better.OTHER STUFF I TRIEDAfter looking online, I also realized I might want to clean out my pot. I scrubbed the pot out with chopsticks right after running it through a cycle (so there was warm water inside). I know some tea drinkers are fanatical about only drinking one type of tea in a pot and building up a residue layer that gives a more powerful taste (of that particular tea). Since I have changed coffee types over the past few years, I wanted to start over and build up a new layer. That was also a great move. The taste is much more fresh.Moral of the review: pick up the charcoal filters, use a cycle of vinegar, wipe down the whole machine, and scrub out the pot.UPDATE 10/29/2012:I bought another box of these filters because keeping the pot clean and fresh is extremely important to me. I used to be lazy about it until I got new filters and did a vinegar cycle (1:3 mix with water), which made a big difference in the taste. A friend who owned a coffee shop let me on an even better trick. Buy the Urnex Cafiza, 20oz powder! Ignore the recommendation for the espresso machine and don't bother scrubbing your pot out with wooden spoons or chopsticks. That powder wiped my coffee machine and pot fresh in one cycle. Enjoying a great cup of coffee right now! Amazing!

effective, despite the value based pricing scheme
My Cuisinart Coffee maker had been in use for the last 5 months. Realizing that this unit had filter cartridges in which the manufacturer instructs should be replaced every two months, I decided to replace after five months use.Upon removing the filters, I noticed that they were puffed up and had the appearance of being 'over inflated'. Could that be an excessive build up of minerals and harmful contaminants therein? I decided to examine the innards to find out the extent of such impurities removed. When I ripped the filter open, I had discovered a small amount of mineral deposits(probably calcium) within the charcoal. There was nothing shiny, slimy, or any other forms of discoloration. This leads me to believe that the water filter on my refrigerator, has performed well at filtering minerals and other impurities. I realize that I only performed a visual inspection of these Cuisinart filters, and that they may in fact perform beyond what the dissected filters show. All things considered, after replacing the filters - with no other changes being made, I was able to experience a better tasting cup of coffee. It can be difficult to understand how such simple filters of low cost materials are priced rather high. The fact is that some people like to drink coffee, some of those coffee drinkers really have high standards in the type of coffee they drink.Coffee drinkers who take the time to analyze the quality of coffee they drink will most likely be the target market for these filters.I believe a nice compromise between the manufacturers recommendation and my own experience will determine how often I change these filters. From now on I'll change the filters every 3-4 months.

Sometimes it's not the real thing, but...
Sometimes it's not the real thing, but this time it was. I've ordered this before from Amazon, and the seller sent a weird generic knockoff brand thing. This time, it was the real thing, and it's a noticeable difference. If it doesn't come in the original packaging, compare it to one you already have; trust me, people will try their best to cheap out if they can it seems. Either that, or they don't realize there's a difference.Either way, about the item:Works as intended, and is pretty fairly priced.

Box that it came in was destoyed
One of the things seemed weird was how the box is destroyed and comes in a different type of plastic wrap for the filters itself. Normally it comes in a proper sealed package that is air tight.
