Fun Tmes!
I love that this is sort of the "Greatest Hits" of Ascension. This is pretty simple; none of crazy events/cards that pop up with other Ascension expansions. Perfect for 2 players, which is what I needed for most times I play. Wish the board was a little bigger (really... honor tokens cannot be placed on board where labeled). This version best suited for beginner players.

Great small-box intro to Ascension
If you are curious about Ascension and you are ok with 2p only (which is the best player count anyway) this is an excellent way to get your feet wet. You get a fully featured based set that is pretty vanilla (but that's what you want when you start out) and has enough components for two players. The small box is also very nice, you may want to get this as a travel sized kit even if you are an experienced player.

Good Stuff
Such a fun game. This is the two-player edition but can be combined with other sets to have up to 6 players.

Easy to learn, easy to expand.
We started with this set and now are several expansions deep. Super addicting!

Quick 2p deckbuilder
I haven't played any others in the Ascension series but I do own many deckbuilders. This is easy to learn. if you've played Star Realms, Hero Realms, Shards of Infinity or anything similar you can just scan the rules for any minor differences and you're good to go. The included board isn't really needed but makes setup even easier since it's all laid out. Even with the board the game footprint remains small. One thing I prefer over some of the other deckbuilders is how the game is scored. In many of them you battle to the death so only the winner has points at the end, everyone else scores 0. Tracking the points is also made easy in this one with the crystals provided. For a 20 minute game it's pretty good.

An excellent starter pack
Ascension: Eternal is the new version of the Ascension: Apprentice Edition starter pack for the Ascension card game system. It's an excellent replacement product.Ascension is a deck-building game. Each player has a standard starting deck of 10 cards. You supliment these by purchasing cards from a central row of 6 cards, some of which help your hand, others of which are "villain" cards to beat for various perks. The center row cards are available to all players for purchase and replenish from a larger deck as they are purchased/beaten. The "coins" to purchase cards are cards as are "attack points" (you get some of each in that starting deck). You earn victory points (aka "honor") in three ways: each card purchased (the starting hand has no points) is worth one or more victory points, defeating monsters with a power resource on some cards, and cards which give victory points each time they are played. Victory points are tallied using a limited supply of plastic "gems." The game ends when the last of the gems is earned by a player.Ascension: Eternal replaces the older Apprentice Edition "tuckbox" with a nice linen finish game box which has a plastic insert large enough to hold the cards and tokens. The Apprentice Edition cardboard "honor" tokens have been replaced with the plastic gems used in all other Ascension game sets. The Apprentice Edition card mat is a piece of folded paper with the play mat on one side and instructions on the other - not that good or useful, especially should you need to access the rules during play (and you will the first few times). "Eternal" has a nice, folding, cardboard board and a true game manual. The new board is a tri-fold affair that's not that large on the table yet serves its purpose quite well. While I do prefer the larger boards that come with the main Ascension sets this one is quite nice and takes up half the table space of those larger boards. This smaller board is quite acceptable and is a nice travel size. The manual is also better written and nicer looking than the folded paper one in the "Apprentice" edition and features the core rules for the game. This set includes a vetted subset of cards from various Ascension sets and expansions for a well rounded play experience. The set of cards is also quite a bit different than what comes in the "Apprentice" edition. Here's the full card list for Eternal with the number of each. Cards also found in Apprentice are marked with an *:2 Abolisher*2 Aiyana’s Messenger2 Animus of the Wild2 Arha Medium2 Arha Sensei*2 Battery Monk3 Cheerful Consort2 Combustion Idol2 Corrosive Widow2 Delirium Pixies2 Dimension Diver1 Earth Tyrant*2 Elder Skeptic*2 Everbloom2 Faithful Guide2 Fist of the Dragon2 Haunting Specter2 Kiri, Meadow Witch1 Kor, Master Innovator3 Lagoon Troll1 Master Dhartha2 Nihilmancer*1 Oziah the Peerless*1 Penumbral Edge3 Phasefiend1 Piercing Eye1 Plasma Cannon2 Processing Hub1 Protean Sea Slug2 Rocket Courier X-99*2 Runic Lycanthrope1 Samael, Eternal Sinner2 Shadow Star* (only 1 of these in Apprentice edition)2 Shadowblade Sentry2 Spike Vixen*2 Tectonic Thrasher1 Temple of Arha1 Teyn, Wolf King3 Tidestalker1 Umbral Edge2 Voidspeaker2 Workshop Gargoyle1 Xeron, Duke of Lies12 Mystic12 Heavy Infantry1 Cultist2x10 card standard starting decksConsidering "Eternal" has a very nice linen finish box, a true game board (although smaller than the "regular" editions), well done manual, plastic honor crystals, and a larger center row deck with mostly different cards than in Apprentice, I'd say it's worth the upgrade and absolutely a good set as a first purchase. It's not quite as portable as the Apprentice edition but looks much nicer on the table.
