Can somebody please tell me (a newbie aquarium keeper) if this product takes the place of other media or is it meant to be used in addition to the other media? Thanks!

It can definitely be used as a replacement for your carbon/charcoal. I've been raising fish for over 50 years. I know a bit about what works, and what doesn't. I've been using a 100ml bag of Purigen in an Aquaclear 20 (sponge, Purigen, bio-rings, no carbon) on a 5 gallon tank with about 50 guppies, about 50 small Mystery Snails, 3 Cory's, and a host of MTS, some Windelov Java Fern, water Sprite, Susswassertang, and dwarf salvinia. Yes, the tank is unbelievably overcrowded, and I'm constantly giving away fish, snails, and plants.... But everything inside is thriving, growing and breeding. My softened water is definitely on the acidic side, and Kh and GH are very low, but everything thrives in totally clear water, with no carbon necessary. I do a 1 gallon water change every week or two. Purigen can and probably should be used in place of carbon.

Does this purigen come in a bag that is ready to be placed into the filter, or do I need to buy a separate filter media bag for it?

Yeah it does come with the Seachem Purigen in a the bag so you can just rinse it under tap water and place it straight into your filter. I recently bought myself another bag of Seachem Purigen and Seachem has updated their packaging which I found very cool. If you're looking for the Seachem Purigen to come ready to go then this is the right size for you (100ml) go ahead and purchase it. If you ever buy the bigger size Seachem Purigen it will come lose in a bottle and then you have to buy something to keep it in. You can always make your own media bags out of women's panty hose or something that can keep the Purigen trapped while still allowing water to pass through.

The bag comes filled with Purigen and it is small (shipping size is 4"x3" so the bag is about that size). Nothing special to the bag so if a small bag loosely filled with fine material will fit into your filter, you will be fine. I actually hang my Purigen at the opening of the filter so the water flows across it. I have another filter and I put the bag on top. You do not want to pack it into the filter because the particles are not coarse enough to allow for water flow. The water will not flow through the material if the bag is tightly packed into your filter.

Yes, it is ready to go. There is enough give in the bag that you can squish it in there. I don't use carbon so I sandwich it between the sponge and the ceramic beads and I still have room. Love the stuff! And it can be regenerated!
