Common Valor
This story was played out thousands of times during the War in a lot of different places by a lot of different American soldiers, Sailors, and Marines. A brutal snapshot of our greatest generation doing what they had to do. I bought this book mainly because it was supposed to be made into a movie by Hanks and Spielberg and I wanted a little primer to get me started. The movie hasn't yet happened unfortunately, but the book and the story live on. Spectacular account of this battle in which the paratroopers found themselves outgunned and in a desperate situation. Kinda like all paratroopers almost all the time. The title of the book is an actual quote by a commander who said "Negative" to a subordinate who requested permission to withdraw his unit due to his untenable situation.

Eyewitness account
I more often find the eyewitness accounts more interesting than the books written by someone who was not there. Such books are becoming more difficult to find as these WWII heroes pass away. Thank you, Mr. Murphy.

Better than Band of Brothers
Excellent account by man who was there.

History revealed
This historical record should be required reading in schools across America. We forget too soon the sacrifice of sooooo many young men to give us the freedom we enjoy today. Excellent accounts of heroism abound. Excellent read,

Unbeatable detail
Having visited La Fiere Bridge on a wonderful Normandy tour with the National WWII Museum, I wanted to learn more about the battle that occurred there. This book, obviously a labor of love, is filled with details from the perspective of the paratroops who fought there. Part I explains the setting, participants, chronology, etc., while Part to is comprised of eyewitness reports from both the battle's participants and those who have commemorated it in subsequent years. There are many maps and illustrations. About the only thing that is missing is a German perspective

Great individual stories
Sgt (later Col.) Murphy provides a great first person account of a little know battle. La Fiere was maybe one of the key battles in the success of the Normandy invasion. The heroes of the 505 PIR took and held this bridge throughout never letting the Germans retake it. Sgt. Murphy was a Pathfinder who maybe had the most dangerous job of all. He recounts the very tough landing, the bloody fighting and the heroic stand of the 505. He also has first person account written by other heroes such as Col. Spencer F. Wurst who also wrote the great book Descending From The Clouds. There are maps and many pictures of the battlefield in this book. I don't think you'll find a better book on this battle.

Historical account of a horrific battle.
Our American paratroopers are among the best in the world. Bravery and fortitude re hallmarks of these fine young men and it shows in this segment of WWII.

Some new details poorly organized and repeating
Some new details regarding the 502nd D-Day airborne assault with claims for revision of others works but little done to show how the revisions fit. The text repeated numerous details/accounts with a number of chronological and geographical jumping around. The dated S.L.A. Marshall's Night Drop is still written, flowing account of the D-Day airborne assault including the 502nd. Perhaps Marshall did not give enough credit to the Le Fiere Bridge battle but Marshall's account flows smoothly.

Good story
This was a great read, an eye witness to the events of 6th June 1944 in one small but important battle. It was a shame that the pictures and maps could not be viewed too well on the Kindle, but on a tablet with the Kindle app this was no problem. Get this if you are interested in the history of the Second World War.

Livre a avoir
Livre que j' ai acheté en anglais, il retranscrit très bien les combats de La Fière. L' auteur nous fait revivre sa campagne de Normandie au travers de son regard ainsi que ceux d' autres hommes de sa compagnie. On est vraiment "dedans".
