Q: I know this is a stupid question, but which size crimping sleeve should I buy for a 1.5 mm steel wire?

I would get the 1.5mm. The next size up will have too much give and even after crimping may not grip firmly. I purchased a crimping tool: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08G7W6TBK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is suitable for these sleeves. I had a large project and the tool made it very easy. For extra strength I used two sleeves at each fixing point. Worked very well.
