MSR Guardian Water Purifier for Backcountry Use, Global Travel, and Emergency Preparedness

Great product, i have been testing it out over the last few days and the result is always the same, good tasting clean water no matter the water source and FAST. I read many reviews on water filters before purchasing one and this one was at the top of most list's and noted its down side was the size of the device upon receiving the guardian i would have to disagree the size is comparable to most systems and simple as could be for use. I will be taking it into the field on Friday for a week long backpack trip and after that i will comment more about the durability of the unit. As of now i am pleased with the quality it seams well built and easy to maintain and can be taken apart and serviced in no time if need be. It also came with a nice zip up carry case. I would say its well worth the money and will probably last me forever. Returned home from the trip, after a good field test I would go with 4.5 starts but will leave it a five. Wear the pump handle attaches to the plunger is a mixture of steel and plastic parts it held up fine but it is all held together with a plastic C clip, if you get much more than a moderate pump pace the clip hangs up and pops loud, I am certain this clip will fail and break at some point so i plan on finding a spare. The clip is basic something you would find at a auto parts store for cents and will be metal :) the other thing i noticed in the promotion video for the pump it says as long as the filter on the end is wet it it will pump only water and no air....that is mostly true but on 2 occasions it pulled air and we were forced to hold it under water and it primed up and was fine. Other then the clip it pumps and cleans water very fast and efficient its quiet and easy to set up and put away i would buy it again.

I picked this up to have access to clean water for a group while backpacking/traveling or for emergency conditions where public water is contaminated. Think of boil water advisories when the local water main has broken. Remember this is a mechanical filter and that chemical or radiological contaminants are NOT removed by mechanical filters. This won't help you fix the water in Flint, MI or magically turn seawater into potable water. Eager to see how this works, I ran a little test with a water source I know is contaminated with coliform bateria. I took samples from the source and from the water filtered by this unit. Running the samples and a control through a test kit showed the filtered water was indeed bacteria free. Ultralight backpackers will balk at the weight but for me I appreciate the ease of use. I was surprised a how fast the filtered water comes out. Fits my Nalgene bottle perfectly. I don't have to mess with bags or wait around for gravity to work. Hose is long enough so you don't fall in the pond or river trying to scoop up water. Comes in a nice zip up case with a fine mesh screen on top so when you put it away the hose can dry off with out contaminating the rest of your stuff. Be sure to buy the annual maintenance kit which is sold separately - it contains o rings and other goodies to maintain your pump I like that this filters viruses. I wish I had had this on recent trips to India and the DR. Now I am better prepared! I also appreciate the fact that it backflushes itself on every stroke. Very clever. This thing is pretty expensive but it is so easy to use I am glad to have it.

This is by far the best purchase I've made out of all of the purchases I've made in buying adventure gear at places like REI, Cabelas, and Amazon. I've taken the Guardian on all of my backpacking trips for the past 2 summers. I also regularly take it car camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, etc. This is one of my top 5 favorite adventure gear items that I own and take it every where I go. I don't know what I would do without it. I plan on taking it to Europe this summer as well. I was initially hesitant in making this purchase due to the price being $350, but have never looked back. I can honestly say it is one of the best purchases I've ever made. If you are on the verge of making a decision like I was at the time, I definitely (100%) think you should purchase it. You will not regret it. If you spread the cost over the 5-10yr lifespan of the product, then it is extremely easy to justify the cost. It is by far better than a lifestraw and other pumps out there. This is the best water purifier on the market for these reasons: it is the fastest for pumping water, the easiest to use, will filter through dirt, and filters the most contaminants (besides chemicals) vs. other filters on the market. For those reasons, I without a doubt recommend this! 5 stars!

AWESOME. Has been the sole source of water on 3 backcountry trips through the Boundary Waters for 4-6 thirsty guys and nobody has ever gotten sick. One campsite was situated ON TOP OF A BEAVER DEN, where the beavers angrily circled me as I pumped water from their stick munching spot, and still nobody got Giardia. Speaking of which, have you ever had Giardiasis? It's not great. I once ate nasty snow in the North Cascades because I did a poor job of managing water, and 2 weeks later I had to time the 30 minutes between trips to the toilet to rush down to the pharmacy for Flagyl. DON'T GET GIARDIA. DO GET THIS WATER FILTER.

Hands down the best there is. Eight of us used this for a seven day canoe trip with no issues. Not having to two stage filtration and sterilization is a real time saver.

個人で持つことのできる浄水器では最もハイエンドな部類になるかと思います。こちらはウィルスも除去できるタイプで、予算が厳しいのならもう1ランク下げて2万円台のミニワークスEXで浄水したものを煮沸すれば対応できます。 断水時には一人一日３Lと言われていますが、これは本当に最低限の数値です。4人家族が3Lで7日間しのぐとしても訳９０Lの水が必要です。 局所的な災害であれば、給水車の2日以内に来てくれるでしょうが、大規模災害となると下手すると1ヶ月以上断水する可能性があります。そうなると水の単価は恐ろしく跳ね上がることでしょう。 7万円の浄水器は確かに高いですが、そのような非常時に陥った時にこの7万円は決して高いとは思えないと思います。

Ich bin mit einem Freund vier Wochen durch die USA gereist. Wir mieteten uns ein Auto, fuhren in die Nationalparks, ließen das Auto stehen und dann hieß es backpacking. Dort hatten wir unsere permits, um jeweils fünf Tage mit Rucksack durch den Park zu wandern: Yellowstone NP, Yosemite NP, Grand Teton NP. In den Nationalparks anderen haben wir nur kürzer gezeltet. Wenn man mit dem Rucksack loszieht, erhält man von der Parkverwaltung feste Plätze, an denen man zelten kann. Dort ist dann immer ein kleiner Fluss oder ein See. Das ist notwendig, weil es ohne nicht geht. Wasser kann man unmöglich mit sich tragen, maximal zwei/drei kleine Wasserflaschen oder ein Trinksystem im Rucksack. Ich z.B. hatte ein zwei Liter Trinksystem im Rucksack, dass reichte im Juli für einen halben Tag. Aber alles, was über einen Tag hinausgeht, jede Übernachtung, erfordert, dass man ein Wasserfilter mit sich nimmt. Ich hatte noch den Sawyer Wasserfilter mit, der natürlich viel billiger ist. Aber er war in jedem Maße ungeeignet. Man braucht soviel Wasser, allein um die Nahrung zuzubereiten, abends Tee zu kochen, morgens Kaffee, Zähne zu putzen, alles sauber zu halten, sich sauber zu halten... Wer jetzt denkt, man kann dort in allen Seen baden, den verweise ich auf unseren Platz im Yellowstone Park: Ein See mit Millionen von Blutegeln. Es war unbeschreiblich. Alles voll, ich habe sowas noch nicht gesehen. Da reingehen wäre interessant gewesen, aber wir verzichteten. Auch kann man nicht immer baden. An den wenigsten Stellen hatten wir einen geeigneten See. Und selbst, wenn man einen See oder Fluss hat, kann man auch nicht einfach so das Wasser trinken, was dort rumsteht oder rumfließt, es ist halt auch nicht ein Fjord in Norwegen. Wir haben am Tag soviel Wasser verbraucht, dass wir oft am Pumpen waren. Ohne den MSR Guardian hätte wir es nicht geschafft. Das Ding pumpt sehr viel Wasser, was bitter nötig war. Mit dem Sawyer ist das einfach nicht zu schaffen. Ich habe meine Nalgene Wasserflasche unten dran geschraubt und in 30 Sekunden einen Liter gepumpt, um Wasservorräte aufzufüllen und Wasser für die Nahrung zu filtern. Die Nahrung war gefriergetrocknet, weil man auch richtiges Essen nicht mitnehmen kann: Wir hatten schon Ultraleicht-Equipment gehabt, aber trotzdem ist ungenügendes freies Volumen im Rucksack immer ein Problem gewesen. Gefriergetrocknete Nahrung im Rucksack ist extrem Platzsparend, man benötigt dann natürlich aber auch entsprechend viel Wasser zur Zubereitung. 3 Mahlzeiten am Tag waren Pflicht, bei 20 kg Marschgepäck und 10 km Marsch auf 2300 Meter Höhe. Dementsprechend viel Wasser braucht man. An einem Tag hatten wir zu Testzwecken den Sawyer Filter (Sawyer Point One) genommen, aber dann abgebrochen, weil es viel zu lange dauerte, das Wasser zu filtern. Der MSR Guardian ist handlich, schnell zu benutzen, hat eine hohe Pumpleistung und ist sehr robust. Auch fühlte ich mich einfach sicherer, weil ich wusste, dass das Fiberglas auch Viren rausfiltert, was beim Sawyer nicht der Fall ist. Die Pumpleistung war überragend. Wenn ich mir vorstelle, nur mit dem Sawyer hingefahren zu sein, so, wie es erst geplant war, weil der Guardian mir zu teuer war, das wäre eine Katastrophe gewesen. Der Militärtechnik, die den Streitkräften der Vereinigten Staaten helfen sollte, überall auf der Welt Wasser zu filtern, kann man bedingungslos vertrauen. Ich habe den Wasserfilter seit dem ein paar mal benutzt, in Irland und Spanien. Ich empfehle ihn uneingeschränkt, auch noch vor den Katadyn Wasserfiltern, die ich davor hatte und mir immer Probleme machten, weil sie nicht dicht waren oder kaputt gingen. An den Guardian habe ich dann noch einen Platypus Gravity Aktivkohlefilter angeschlossen. Der wird mit einem Plastikrohr geliefert, so dass man das Plastikrohr an das Ende des Guardian macht, da dann den Aktivkohlefilter dran und das Wasser war klar und schmeckte wie Leitungswasser. Auch aus den braunsten Brühen, es ist beeindruckend. Ohne Aktivkohlefilter ging es auch, aber das Wasser war etwas trüber und schmeckte torfig. Ich habe überlegt, ob es aufgrund des Preises nur vier Sterne sind. Aber meine Trekkingreisen haben mich so sehr überzeugt, auch das Studium der im Guardian steckenden Technik, dass ich mich für fünf Sterne entschieden habe.
