Some great buying ideas, as well as techniques to lay a perfect floor
I have laid wood floors before, helped by a friend who "had experience in that sort of thing". The result was a badly laid floor which buckled, looked ugly in places, and generally looked like a total amateur had tried to put it down (which was the case). With some renovations of my house coming up, I wanted to replace carpeted floors with some nice hardwood, but also wanted to see if I could save the thousands of dollars in installation fees and spend that money on upgraded flooring, and do the whole thing myself. First step: buy this B&D book, one of a series, and another in my collection.Looking through the early pages you can see the various forms of flooring available and their advantages and disadvantages. It also puts to rest some stories I have heard about engineered wood, and alternatives like bamboo. The book helped me decide on the type of floor I wanted, and then I read through how to actually lay the floor. Fortunately, there were no weird angles of steps to deal with, so the flooring went in easily and surprisingly fast. I rented the tools I needed, and had the entire job done in a day. The floor looks great, and it's stable and doesn't buckle anywhere. All thanks to this book!
