It may only be my situation but I looked at this metal cast smoke as a way to take my bright chrome "plastic clad" wheels down to a much darker shade to better match the "Night Runner" effect I'm going for without just going to a black wheel. Then I get the cans in the mail and the cap looks very much like the chrome already on my wheels! Well I have already replaced my original mirrors so I took one of them with the plastic "chrome" covers and figured it was time for a test run. Since this was only a test I spent only a little time with a degreaser wipe down and a very light sanding with 1000grit wet/dry sandpaper. I dropped on three light coats of gray sandable primer 10 minutes apart. (Note: Duplicolor says use their MC100 Metalcast Ground Coat under this instead of a standard primer) I waited 20 minutes and then did three light coats of the smoke 10 minutes apart (has a 1 hour flash time) and since this was not a wheel paint, I figured I'd cover the smoke with the Duplicolor clear wheel coating to protect it a little better. Again three light coats 10 minutes apart. First off, when the smoke goes on, it is in fact the color shown on the cap in the picture. Light coats start out looking spotty but after three light coats, it's dark and looks great. As advertised, this can be done at this point because you get nice metal look by itself. Second, if you do use a clear coat on top of the smoke be advised that when you first spray it on the smoke will immediately look like it is turning an almost white light gray and you think you've ruined it! Thankfully though if you walk away and let it dry for the same 10 minute interval and return, the smoke has also returned to its original dark color and once you put on three light coats you have a great looking dark smoke color with a great shine! As with most clear coats even though the can says two light coats followed by one medium coat stick with three light coats. I tried a "light" medium third coat and got some runs. It is very easy to do so stick to the light coats and it looks great. This Metalcast Smoke is great. I highly recommend this product.

Works as described but sputters when spraying leaving 1/8 inch dots. And yes, we'll shaken. And I have painted with spray cans for many years.

Product is great, I will have to get another can, while I wait ill lightly sand again, final finish coat, will have a gloss finish.. believe it or not, take a good look at the actual finish, because those colors are night and day. !! But it will work, I’ve got a matalic blue on other parts.. acorn candy machine early model teardrop style.! Enjoy your new color.. always BOLD !! After reviewing and clearly checked the directions, I miss read application. So here is the true color applied over primer. Turns out I really like the look, I’m sure it will look different after gloss finish. This has to get 1 more coat of finish before I apply the clear coat. I’m good with this.!! 👀

The paint description is what I needed in terms of coloring - so thought I'd try it even with the relatively expensive cost (e.g. $14/can). The paint went on clean 2"x 2" steel tubing that had two coats of primer. In other words, I wouldn't expect many issues with coating. The instructions say to do two light coats 10 minutes apart and then a 'wet' coat. Followed the instructions. The first thing that was noticeable was the inconsistency of color as it was sprayed on. Could be the nozzle and fact that it was going on a narrow target. I figured that's why the two 'light' coats were recommended. Fine up to that point. BUT...when i sprayed the wet coat, all seemed fine until I did a check 5-10 minutes later and found a few spots that had runs. REALLY annoying....especially after following the instructions and doing the level of prep work I did. I waited a week to sand and knock down the runs - bought more paint in the interim (not happy about that) to make sure there was enough on the respray - and tried again. After MANY light coats - with a goal of making sure the redone sections were smooth, the same thing appears to have occurred. As I said above, this may be a nozzle issue. But, I doubt it. Given the amount of spray required to get full coverage, I think this is just the nature of the pain. And for the price paid, it makes the value of the paint in the low category. I can't honestly say if the paint is durable but I can say it's costing me WAY more than anticipated to get four furniture legs painted. Again....REALLY ANNOYING!
