Excellent, superior alternative to round Nalgene bottles -- great for camping/bushcraft/outdoors
The Nalgene Oasis Bottle is an excellent alternative to the ubiquitous round-style Nalgene bottles, and in my opinion, a much better choice for most outdoor activities (hiking/camping, bushcraft, etc.).Like the round Nalgene bottles, the Oasis bottle holds a full 32 oz./1L of liquid. In fact, you can squeeze in a little extra--about 34 fl. oz. if you fill it all the way up to the neck. But it has a much more convenient form factor. Whereas round Nalgene bottles seem bulky and frequently tend to create pockets of dead space or uncomfortable bulges in a pack, the Oasis bottle has the traditional USGI Canteen shape (an exact match, in fact... it nests perfectly in a USGI Canteen Cup!). Looking down on it from above, its shape is almost rectangular shape: wider in one direction but considerably slimmer in the other, with a curve/dent on one side to give it the traditional curvature of a USGI Canteen. This results in at least two desirable benefits:1. It is easier and more comfortable to pack in many packs or to wear on a belt. The rectangular shape nestles more naturally alongside other equipment with less deadspace, and the inward curvature/dent on one side, if turned inward, also prevents the uncomfortable bulging sensation that round Nalgenes (or other similar bottles) can cause when worn on a hip belt or close to the body.2. It is easier and more comfortable to hold. When you pick up the Oasis bottle, your thumb nestles into the dent while the rest of your fingers follow the excellent curvature and wrap securely around the opposite side. This is absolutely more ergonomic than the wide round shape of typical Nalgene bottles, making it easier to hold onto with less pressure/fatigue and a surer grip, especially if your hands happen to be wet. So you're less likely to drop this bottle and more comfortable holding it as you drink. The plastic used to make the Oasis bottle is also noticeably less rigid (i.e., more "flexy") than the stiff lexan used to make the regular round Nalgenes. It also has a subtle grainy texture. Both of these qualities further improve the ergonomics, and the bottle seems no less durable than a regular lexan. (What it lacks in stiffness, it seems to make up in give/flex, still proving more than durable enough to survive hard falls onto hard surfaces without cracking.) I like it.Lastly, the narrow mouth is sufficiently large for easy filling/drinking (at least 50% wider than the mouth on a typical soda bottle), yet narrow enough to be considerably easier to drink/sip from than the more common, wide-mouth Nalgene bottles. The only shortcoming I notice in comparison with a traditional round Nalgene bottle is the lack of any measurement gauge on the Oasis bottle. That is the only feature I miss, but if you purchase a USGI canteen cup and use the tip of a nail to stamp mild dents in the metal to mark the most common measurements you desire, you can carry the Oasis bottle nestled inside the canteen cup, and use the latter whenever you need to measure out a specific amount of liquid for any reason. Alternatively, it wouldn't be difficult to paint or write measurement marks on the Oasis bottle with a permanent marker, though I suspect they would wear off and need regular touching up over time.If you're looking for a great, 1-liter bottle for hiking/camping/hunting/bushcraft, the Oasis bottle is an excellent choice. And if you're wanting an "upgrade" to the traditional USGI canteen (which is made of a less durable and also opaque plastic), this is a sure bet. Give the Oasis bottle a try. Well worth the $9 I spent. And I love the Coyote color as a discrete, nature/wilderness color instead of the brightly colored options you usually find for round Nalgenes.
