Less mess than with a knife
I really thought I'd found the holy grail of kitchen gadgets watching some of the online videos about this product. Paying an arm and a leg for diced watermelon at the market was getting old. You can easily pay more for a small tub of fruit than an entire melon costs. I was excited about having a gadget that would make quick work of the task.I can say it works....but not that well and/or it's operator error. The tips of the "tongs" are pretty sharp but because of the cross bar that actually does the cutting it takes quite a bit of effort to push/pull them through the watermelon flesh. Because the handle is just curved metal covered with silicone it's a very uncomfortable feeling. These really need something more like a round metal or wooden handle like a chef's knife. Trying to push them into the flesh then draw them down through and out the other side is almost the same stroke as you'd make with a knife to accomplish the identical task. However, it would just be sliced and not cut free from the rind.I noticed that the tips go in easily but you can't get too close into the edge of the rind. As you try and push them down while pulling across to cut the flesh loose they tend to ride up without constant downward pressure. They also tend to cut too deep on the exit so the edge of your slices end up with a lot of the white part of the rind on that part. Once you make the first set of cuts you can fish these out in large chunks with the tongs and essentially have "melon steaks". My kids seem to enjoy those almost more than the small diced pieces. If you really want smaller pieces then you can crosscut and have sort of melon "rods". Multiple crosscuts at different depths gets you little cubes but that takes extra work. The biggest advantage to this product is cleanup. I you want to dice up a melon normally it drips all over the place and makes a huge mess. With this gadget you really only need to make one cut to split a melon in half. Once that's done the juices mostly stay inside the rind until you're finished.

Love it and use it often.
I'm still perfecting the technique of slicing watermelon with this tool. Even though my slices aren't perfect, it does a great job of cutting and picking up. I love the fact that the juices stay in the rind and not all over the counter, and with a bit more practice I think I can master cleaning the fruit from the sides well. I've found that using the tool serrated side up makes guiding a lot easier for me, and can get closer to the rind. I have not tried it with other melons, but it's great for watermelon!

Difficult to master
It's hard to get the hang of this. It does work but it's not as easy as advertised!
