Yes- and it's not a leather smell to me. It is a chemical, plastic-y smell (not necessarily the product, but the packaging. Otherwise I love it.

How long have you had this bag and how oftne do you carry it? How is it holding up over time?

The bag itself is absolutely great. I carry it everyday and it's only becoming more beautiful with age. However, the shoulder strap is horrible. After about 5 months the clasp broke. I contacted the company and they sent a replacement. The replacement only lasted about 3 months before it broke. It is made of cheap plastic. I only carry a laptop, ipad, legal notebook and a few pens and sticky notes so it's not like it's carrying 20 pounds of stuff.

I wear a white shirt as part of a work uniform. Does this bag have a tendency to stain clothing?

It will depend if you treat the bag with any oil or conditioner. You can use leather shampoo to keep it from staining your shirt, but research the leather shampoo before useing

How do you keep the stain from coming off?? As soon as I touched the bag after opening it the dark residue rubbed off on my hands.

I just got this item and have used it for around a week and I noticed no problem with stain coming off. The bag I got had a nice sheet inside from the manufacturer including contact info in the event of any sort of a problem. If yours did not come with this and has defective staining, I wonder whether you got the authentic product.
