Where were you in 1962 ?
'Way back in 1962, Sixties Teen Idol Bobby Rydell of the blond pompadour introduced a new concept aimed at American Teenagers who rarely, if ever bought anything but 45rpm single records. It was called "All the Hits by Bobby Rydell", an album on which Bobby covered other contemporary Pop Hits of the Day. This then, is that album, an album which would be the first in a series from Cameo Parkway.Bobby Sings:Twistin' the Night Away (Sam Cooke)Break it to me Gently (Brenda Lee)Dream Baby (Roy Orbison)What's Your Name (Don & Juan)The One Who Really Loves You (Mary Wells)Don't Break the Heart That Loves You (Connie Francis)Baby, It's You (The Shirelles)Soldier Boy (The Shirelles)Hey Baby (Bruce Channel)and Bobby's own hits:I've Got BonnieI'll Never dance AgainThis would be the first in a series that would include similar outings from Dee Dee Sharp (2 volumes), Chubby Checker, The Dovells (Doo-Wop), The Orlons and Jo Ann Campbell (Country Hits) and All the Hits Volume 2 from Bobby.John Zacherley's Cameo-Parkway album DINNER WITH DRAC included Halloween parodies on many of the Cameo-Parkway dance hits like "Hully Gully Baby" (as "Hurry Bury Baby", etc). I believe you can still find it on Amazon.Motown issued a similar concept with their album THE MARVELETTES SING (now available from Hallmark via Amazon and highly recommended as a companion to this CD). Motown dropped this concept after that one LP.Bobby was an excellent singer and he covers all this diverse material with style and grace. Brill Building songs like the Connie Francis and Shirelles tracks are right up his alley. His delivery on "Dream Baby" and "Twistin' the Night Away" is energetic and gives up nothing to the originals. He is especially good on the soulful ballad "What's Your Name" in which he sings a duet with himself. If Bobby is out of his element, it is on Mary Wells' "The One Who Really Loves You", and only because he, being a man, lacks the sultry quality that Mary gave to her songs. Likewise, Barbara George's "I Know" is not a comfortable fit for Bobby, still, he gives it all he's got. Bobby would make it to the Big Screen in 1963 when he would star in BYE BYE BIRDIE opposite Ann-Margret. I thought he was excellent in the movie. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, the "British Invasion" took place and virtually wiped the clean cut teen idols off the map. This album is a testament to what was perhaps a better place and time. You be the judge.I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.

Great rock & roll memories
I had this album when I was about 10 or 11; so glad I bought it again. Great artists, including Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker, Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells, the Orleans. Fun music!

I think I prefer the way the original artists sang these songs
This was pretty good, but for me personally, I prefer the original hits that Bobby sang, like Sway and Volare. It's a nostalgic thing for me.

Good
This was a little disappointing as these were not hits in the UK so was not familiar with these hits sadly. I much preferred the Very Best of Bobby Rydell as these were hits in the UK which I knew and love. 8/10
