Such a pleasure!
This is a fascinating fictional account of political turmoil in an unnamed Far East country governed by a totalitarian regime. Mostly, it is a tale about the ways in which time, place and history interact with people’s personal stories and relationships. The two protagonists, two brothers found in the midst of historical crossroads, following different paths and, inevitably, colliding, are rich, engaging, charmingly flawed and totally believable characters. A commentary on power and idealism, on family dynamics and on the way personality infiltrates memory, a novel of ideas and of action, as well as a masterclass on vibrant language, Wingate’s book is a hugely enjoyable and thought provoking tale that stays with you long after the last page has been turned.

Gripping tale of political turmoil
A riveting story set in an unnamed Asian city that makes the reader reflect on the sad reality of Hong Kong’s political unrest in recent years. It includes thought-provoking political dialogue and heart-racing scenes of confrontation between idealistic protesters and police carrying out the brutal orders of an all-powerful federation. One of the protagonists, Doug, is caught up in all this, while his brother Jack drinks the night away in a blur of hedonism and self-destruction.Wonderfully written and well-crafted novel with a clever interweaving of narratives, present and past. It also touches on the themes of difficult family dynamics, loneliness and ageing parents. Would recommend.

A cracking adventure
This is the gripping story of Jack, and his brother Doug, who move to an unnamed city in the Far East in search of new experiences. The city is part of a federation under the control of an authoritarian leader. The description of life in the city is very convincing, not surprising perhaps as the author spent several years living and working in the Far East. But I especially liked the psychological aspect of the novel, contrasting the personalities and life choices of the two brothers, and how they each viewed their respective childhoods within the same household. We learn quite a lot about their background, and ongoing events back home form a compelling sub-plot.The main plot revolves around the character development of the two brothers. Jack goes downhill, tempted by the vices of his new environment, while Doug becomes more idealistic and politically active. We are held in suspense as to how this will end for each of them. But there is even greater suspense with regard to the future of the city within the federation. The book climaxes with a confrontation between the students and the police. This is brilliantly written! The description of the 'battle' had me on the edge of my seat. I won't reveal the outcome here!Overall an absorbing book, and very well-written in a clear, concise style. Impressive for a first novel!

An exciting depiction of the collision between the personal and the sweep of political change.
A fascinating insight into the intersection between individual family dynamics and national political movements. I felt I knew the central characters Jack, his brother Doug and their family, but also the way in which young activists chaotically and naively pick their way through processes which spin horribly out of control. Set in an environment which is easily recognisable as a real unfolding political and social drama, the author is able to draw an authentic picture of south east Asian city life. Against this backdrop, politics and the personal convincingly collide.

Great read. Recommended.
This enjoyable and topical novel clearly benefits from the author’s understanding and observations of Asia. The writer takes us on a stimulating journey of human experience where two brothers’ lives unravel amid the triggering of pent up political tension.A well-crafted and descriptive book which weaves together their story lines leaving the reader hoping for a sequel.

Great book! Easy to read and well written, and a story that sweeps you along to the end. Really enjoyed the development of the brothers, the clever, ambitious, disillusioned career guy and the passionate, political idealist. Finishes with need of a sequel........
