Smart Management Module (SMM)

I purchased several of these for my home. I use them on the hottub, steam humidifier (Honeywell), and my EV charger. They work great and my only complaint is that the contactor has a 50a limit and they don't sell a larger unit or the control board separately.

This is a REALLY slick load shed device. It operates on 240 VAC. It does not require any connection to the transfer switch or the generator except that it monitors the power for frequency variation or deviation from 60 Hertz. If it senses the loss of 60 Hertz it will drop its relay turning off the connected load. It is set up to control a 240 VAC load. The relay in the unit will handle up to 50 Amps. I modified my unit by replacing the relay with a 3PDT and used that to control my electric heat by interrupting the thermostat control wiring, a second unit was similarly modified to block the flow sensor in my tankless water heater. A third unit prevents my electric clothes dryer from working. One bad thing, the 240 VAC relay supplied has power applied to the coil at all times the power is coming from the utility. It is noisy, so you don't want to locate it anywhere that you would be annoyed by a 60 Hertz hum.

I did some testing while on generator and these do not work. They don't lockout as advertised. There is a paper insert in the manual that updated the logic and removed that function. They also don't seem to shed when the generator is heavily loaded. I did contact Generac support several times and verified that the setup is correct. I've had 2 of these modules installed for about a year and have run several tests while on generator. I haven't critically loaded the generator to see what happens. My plan was to lockout 2 EV chargers while on generator. I didn't want them to charge while on generator.

Awesome product. Easy to wire in. Shuts my hot tub off automatically when the generator kicks on. Then power comes back and the hot tub comes back online automatically. Gotta love it.

I installed 4 of these a few years ago when I installed my generator. About a month ago one AC zone in my house was not working. Last week another zone also stopped working. HVAC company came out to service the AC units, Only to find out that the ACs were not getting power. two of these models had failed. Now the units cost $100 MORE than when I bought them. $250 for something that is going to fail in a few years is a bit expensive!

This item replace a unit that went out on our system. Generac replaced the first two that went out after 16 months under warranty, but there is an issue with these that persists that causes there failure over time. This is independent of the actual engagement of the device. I have resigned myself to replacing these periodically as they fail. I keep a couple on hand so they are available. If you are reasonably electrically inclined (and shut the breaker off), they are not difficult to replace. If not, get an electrician or your generator company to replace, and pay the fee. The seller and shipping are 5 star, the actual product, unfortunately, is only 2 star since it fails over time.
