Q: Is this ink waterproof, specifically is it safe to use with watercolors?

No, in my experience this ink is extremely susceptible to bleeding when in contact with water. You should maybe look into an India ink or an alcohol based w if you are looking to have line art with your water color

Like many inks, it will smear if it gets wet. I’ve used these pens for years and love them.

Q: Is this ink check writing safe? In other words water proof?

No, but it's better than most. Honestly, Save yourself the trouble and just don't use fountain pens for signatures. Get a uniball 207 for that. (platinum carbon black is the only waterproof fountain pen ink but it's not worth the trouble if that's all you use it for) It's a good ink for writing and one of my favorites but I would advise against that use case scenario.

Q: Can these cartridges be used with non-Pilot brand fountain pens?

Pilot/Namiki cartridges are proprietary - can't be used with other brands, alas. Same with Cross and Parker cartridges.
