It protects the surface.
It looks great in my car and the price was just right. My only disappointment is that I thought it was going to have more cushion also when you look at the pictures it seems as though the install was as if it were a snap on kind of like a shower cap if that makes sense. Instead it has 3 elastic bands that goes across to hold it in place. Honestly aside from that it fits well and look nice.
