Can someone please validate the height? 17.9 inches would not even reach my kneecap so I think that is an error in the description. 27.9 maybe?

can I remove one of the glass shelves?

Jillian, You can customize this unit very easily. You can purchase 8mm x 1.25 threaded stock rod from your local Ace Hardware. Then you can decide however many shelves you want and then cut the rods to whatever length you need. You just need to have the ability to cut and grind and bevel the ends of the threaded rod and assemble the unit. Just remember to use the top caps from the seven inch columns for whatever columns you use to go against the top shelf with the aluminum discs attached. Look for my review with photos.

Would it work without any shelves (with just the top)?

No, All the shelves need to be assembled so the cabinet is stationary. That's why they call it a media stand.

Is there enough vertical space under the bottom shelf for a power strip full of plugs?

Well,vertical might be tricky,i have ours on the floor behind the unit..depending on how deep your electronic units are? I believe you can find space on 1 of the tiers?power strips as you know come in different sizes bottom space is about 9&5/8" tall,i hope this helps friend?
