Patience is a virtue
My favorite part concerns the patience required to be a successful hunter, a much-neglected virtue today.Respectful of the environment, tradition, culture and life. Incredibly comprehensive. I intend to use this repeatedly to consult (it's probably not one to read cover to cover as there are some sections/hunting styles I don't plan to pursue ever).

What you need to know!
Having been a hunter and outdoorsman for well over half a century it's easy to forget that not everyone has had that kind of experience growing up. Woodland knowledge that we take for granted is not always within easy reach of someone who grew up on more urban areas and has never hunted. Mr. Gatz's book is a wonderful primer to help the novice get acquainted with the sporting life and remind some of the old dogs, (like me) of a few things we may have lost over the years. All in all, a great read. I highly reccomend it to novice and experienced alike!

Basic but thorough
This a basic but thorough beginner's guide to hunting. It covers hunting just about everything imaginable, from squirrels and quail to big game, using everything from a slingshot to a muzzle-loader to a large bore rifle. In case you get lost hunting, the book even provides a chapter on wilderness survival. I have a slight disagreement with the author that a 410 gauge is an appropriate gun for hunting turkeys. From my experience, you shoot a turkey with a 410 and you'll just end up pissing it off.

husband said it was a waste of money
I bought this for my husband. It didn't answer the questions he had. He said not to get him anymore books that was a waste of money. He wasn't happy at all.

The Knowledge in This Book is Like the Advice Your Grandfather Would Have Given You
I claim to be a hunter, and I am, though my experience neither matches my of my friend's knowledge nor does it encompass their expertise. Because of this, I will tell you that "The Simple Hunting Guide" is an outstanding source for anyone new to hunting or still on their neophyte path to a grand slam.Critical is the discussion about efficacy. Of harvesting your food. Of providing for others. If no one introduced you to hunting at an early age, or if you have forsaken hunting as an abomination, the author provides a thorough hint of the efficacy of hunting.I wish I'd had this book when I began to hunt.

Great info for beginners
I've never hunted in my life. I moved and live in the Appalachian mountains where wild game is abundant. I've always wanted to learn in case a time arrives where I need to as to feed my family in case of an natural disaster or emergency. This book is pretty detailed with regards to what you need to know.Going into the forest looking for game, especially by your self, can be frightening and dangerous. The author details what to do in terms of survival if you get lost. Excellent chapter.Various training and licensing through out the states and Canadian provinces are covered. This is pretty much a must know section.Different ammo from shotguns to long rifle .22 is covered. Although most of us know you don't hunt with a military 45 caliber, these chapter explains the difference in shot. The various games are explained. Everything on how to track, how to trap, and even their taste is discussed. There is a lot to learn about the various animals that you can hunt. Where you can find the game is well written and with that information, you should be successful in your first hunt.Legal aspects are covered such as hunting on private and public land, and even going on to private land to track your wounded animal.Something I always look at in informative books is their references. The author did his homework and used much information that is available to write this book.Overall, I learned a lot from this book. If I ever need to hunt to provide for my family, I'll use this book as a reference. Excellent book.

More info than I bargained for!
It was my mistake - I should have believed that this was a COMPLETE guide. I was expecting a lighter, quicker read. What I got was an intensive, thoroughly-researched book full of pro tips and advice only a real hunter could have written. I'm keeping it to read over again when I have more time!

Great tips and valuable information.
Excellent book with some great tips and valuable information. I especially like that the author included knowledge that may be evident to more experienced hunters, but for beginners it's really nice to be educated on a variety of topics starting with the basics of hunting.
