Essential for battling fatty liver
Has great information to understand liver function and fatty liver disease in easy-to-understand language. In the past two months I have lost over 10 lbs (162 to 150) and my liver enzyme levels fell by 50%.My favorite part is the sample 4-week menu with recipes. I’m terrible at planning meals and can’t be trusted to incorporate vegetable and fruits on a daily basis. So a set menu ensured that I snacked on fruit and nuts and completely eliminated processed junk food. The recipes are easy to follow and you can get the ingredients at any health-foods store. And the dishes are SO GOOD! I feel like my palate has adjusted to the natural taste of food, rather than the overly salted or sugared dishes of popular American cuisine. The recipes rely more on spices and aromatics to bring out flavor; and often the spices are also anti-inflammatory (like turmeric or cinnamon).I am so grateful for this book and I highly recommend it, not just to those suffering from fatty liver, but to those seeking a healthier diet and overall lifestyle.

Easy read with some impact on foods
Overall the book is easy to read, and understand, accurate index. Lots of sidebar-type boxes with information. Lacking is 'enriched' in our food, which can cause liver issues. The other are the recipes, they are very specific to certain foods. I have a grain allergy and can't eat nuts. There is no substitute list for items such as these. And who likes kale? That is just another trendy food item that will be replaced in time. Deli meats with nitrates are another problem. My ferritin levels go very high and then come back down, mostly due to enriched foods and wheat. they have seaweed, can you eat that if you have thyroid problems? I would like a more timeless book that hangs around for years to read again and again. I can work on my food substitute list. Pages 1-156 I can re-read. A stress checklist is okay, but who doesn't have stress sometimes?

Inspirational
As a Registered Dietitian I know a lot about nutrition and still need reminders of how I can improve my health. I tried some new foods after reading this. I look forward to sharing this with my patients.

credibility red flags
I bought this book initially for the recipes, which I made 2 of the first day I had it. They were simple and delicious. (Easy Corn Soup, Curried Tofu, Cashew, and Broccoli Stir-Fry). I found this book by searching on google for tofu recipes for liver health and came across the Garlicky Tofu recipe featured in TODAY. I made that first, then bought this book. The first third of the book provides an overview of the fatty liver disease, what it is, and provides examples/anecdotes of individual's discovery, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome. Toward the credibility of the book, there are 14 pages of selected references at the end, though they are not well cited throughout. This book helped me calm down a lot about the potential diagnosis of someone I care about. It put fatty liver in perspective, and made it something much more treatable and common than the nurse practitioner at the GI's office made it seem. That being said -I appreciate the middle 3rd of the book which addresses "where to go from here". Lifestyle change, exercise, etc. However, this is where the trouble started. In the chapter on "Liver Love" The author gave her personal opinion about the ability of restaurants to assess and address past issues and still stay in business: "my personal policy is to steer clear of restaurants that have been cited for food borne illnesses in the past." This is a fallacy, without support. Then in the chapter on "The Protective Role of Exercise" she gave her subjective opinion about the aesthetic appeal of weight loss: "Plus, a consistent exercise regimen doesn't just make you look better on the outside; it improves the way you look inside, too!" This is a fallacy as well. A completely subjective opinion, unrelated to the topic at hand - or the rest of the paragraph. On the next page she says " The truth is, insulin resistance and the presence of fat on the liver tend to go together like Bert and Ernie, Simon and Garfunkel, Abbot and Costello. It's hard to imagine one without the other." Simon and Garfunkel have a notably rocky relationship, and Abbot and Costello got into a long feud that started with a maid. So - bad simile, Kristin.I hate to be a critic in this nitpicky way - but again, I am trying to learn more about something that could be affecting someone I care about, and I need to know that I can trust the information, which is difficult when the author clearly needs to be taken with a grain of salt.Overall the message is to get good nutrition, maintain a healthy weight, maintain an exercise plan, and fatty liver disease is fairly common and treatable.

Helpful
I had never given my liver any thought until I was diagnosed with NAFLD. After reading a couple of books, I found this one and it is the most sensible book I have found thus far. This book is very informative, practical and helpful. The recipes seem easy, simple and probably taste good. I am hoping that making small diet changes every day will reverse this disease and improve my overall health. Thankful for the straightforward information.

Has all the information you need
While undergoing an endoscopy for another problem, it was discovered that I had a small amount of fat on my liver. Not being a good thing, the gastroenterologist recommended this book. It has a wealth of information, plus the right foods to eat, plus actual meal plans you can follow. This is an excellent book.

Great, simple, effective explanation of the liver and it's functions.
This book has been very helpful in explaining the issues with the liver. How it relates to all your organs etc. Bought because a loved one has NASH and I wanted to learn more about cirrhosis. Loved how it was straight forward and explained in a way that a non medical person can understand. Also, I liked the explanation part and the recipe and diet part I haven't done as much with. But definitely recommend for anyone to read simply because it helps to motivate and explain your body and it's functions.

really informative
Love it - well explained - but scary when you do have NAFLD and have not been as strict since Covid hit. But an eye opener too! It’s a silent killer.

Thorough coverage - educational and useful
Lots of information to enable one to understand and to tailor their own routine/lifestyle. Also the recipes were a surprise - delicious, easy, healthy, and wholesomely satisfying. The menu plan and included recipes make it very easy to sort ones food issues/problems out, both as on it's own and/or as an example to use as a guide.

Amazing book
I have NAFLD and I was struggling to find good foods to eat and constantly watching my fat and sugar intake. This book has opened me up to what I can eat and not worry. Some things in the book I was avoiding cause it was fats but now I realize even though you should avoid fats, you can have good fats. This book is just amazing and I think I will have great health since starting to follow it
