Speedball 5" x 5" Gel Printing Plate

Really great. Pretty heavy and think… sturdy

I have been pulling mono prints since the 1970s. That's long before gel plates were available commercially.I own six different plates made by two other companies. I have NEVER experienced problems like I did with this product.I used the same paint ( Amsterdam, Liquitex and Golden Acrylics), the same brayers and the identical paper that I have been using for many years. Every print stuck to the plate!! I varied the amount of paint, it made zero difference. I tried other weight papers, again, no difference. I have orders to fill and really expected this to be wonderful! SPEEDBALL is synonymous with printmaking! I learned with their products and still own printmaking products made by them that were purchased in the 1970s. What gives, Speedball??? This is just disgraceful.When pulling a mono print, you should have some time to create on the plate. Not with this. Just simply using my hand to gently burnish, the paper completely stuck.I'm not only disappointed, I'm disgusted.

The media could not be loaded. Excited to receive the item. The size is really good. I had this sent to the Philippines and was kinda expecting to have some warping and dents but the speedball packaging is very sturdy and I got the item in perfect condition. Cant wait to try and use it.

I was super excited to try this gel plate. Being an established artist, I am always looking for other tools to add to my creating experience! Happy to have added this to my art tools!

At the time of purchase, this brand was the least expensive for the 8x10 plate. I have other plates from other companies (and homemade plates) What I like about this plate is that it is thinner, lighter, clearer and felt sturdy that it wouldn’t knick easily. I didn’t know though at time of purchase, that it was made for use with printmaking inks, although other media can be used. When I used inks, the colors pulled wonderfully, and almost tie dyed effects were possible with glossy paper. Fluid acrylics also worked well. However, thicker heavy body and craft acrylics almost dried too quickly, and the prints were not as clean,nor could I get much ghost prints. (I did use cheaper grade acrylics, not my Golden open or heavy body acrylic, so that may be a factor) Layering the acrylics after first pull to get another print with both colors didn’t work so well either. Cleaning the acrylics off the plate was also not so easy, they didn’t wash off well, nor come off easily with baby wipes or baby oil. Had to rub the paint off. The other plates seemed to work with the heavy body and craft acrylics better and clean easily. So, if you want a gel plate that does great with inks and fluid acrylics, this plate is perfect for that.

Great size to make smaller pieces!

The ease of using this gel plate is wonderful. Perfect size for inking card backgrounds. Love that it has a great caseto keep it in.
