Q: Just got 2nd bag. now i see a warning on the bag about cadmium.the company needs to address this concern immediately. what are the facts?

Our Organic Cacao is non alkalized. The cacao powder contains cadmium. The cadmium is a naturally occurring metal that is found in the soil. The label on the back of Cacao bag is due to Prop 65 that is a California exclusive. Our products are well below the standards for the FDA. Q: What is the level of heavy metals in this product?

USA Today has an article dated 1/6/2023 that states that Trader Joe's is being sued. The suit alleges that the company misled consumers by failing to disclose on packaging that the select dark chocolate products contain lead and cadmium.

All cacao has cadmium in it. It is absorbed from the soil, even if it is farmed organically, due to natural cadmium content in the soil. The only question is how much cadmium is in the particular brand, not whether it has any. They ALL do, and there is no way around it, since it is not due to methods of farming or pesticide usage, and there is no way for cadmium to be removed from the beans once they are harvested either. What the fear-mongers doen't tell you is that cadmium is narurally present in practically everything you eat - , including fish, meat, grains, fruits, and vegetables - foods consumed daily, in larger quantities, and that are more affected by cadmium contamination than chocolate is,. According to experts who have studied this issue, the worst brands for cadmium in cocoa average 1 microgram per gram of cocoa powder. While this does exceed the WHO's recommendation to stay under 0.3 micrograms, you could safely have 5 tablespoons of pure cocoa powder every day before the trace levels of cadmium become an issue.
