Until Jai… - Great movie.. iconic Review: Good FIlm - It was good. Maybe because I watched it only now for the first time, I didn't find it great. Some of the fight scenes were too choreographed. I found it odd that a man with no arms was able to beat someone up without much fightback!

Watch this NOW!!!!!!!
In timeless classic bollywood tradition this movie is by far one of the best ever made, acting, singing, dancing and one of the best soundtracks you can lay your hands on. My partner(who's english) had never seen a hindi film before and was so taken back by it,laughing and crying along with the movie. if this movie was released today it would still be a smash. If you love movies, watch this....

Not the version I was expecting
I was after the original theatrical "censored" version of the film. The product description on the page said it had a run time of 198 minutes, which is the right length for the censored version. However when I got the DVD the case said it was 204 minutes long, and having played the film on dvd player, it did unfortunately turn out to be the directors cut version with the alternate ending. Annoying but my own fault for not contacting the seller before purchasing to verify

......" What's going to happen to you now, Kaalia? "......
Set in a village, Sholay revolves around a former police officer who hires two fearless ex-criminals to rid of bandits who steal from the local population. This is a carefully constructed film and for one that runs for nearly four hours, it's quite an achievement. There are also solid performances from all the cast and Amjad Khan tops the bill with his portrayal of the chief bandit - Ghabbar Singh. Many would argue that had he not played the role, the film would have been placed in the mediocre shelf. The storyline is borrowed from the Seven Samurai. Some of the set pieces are borrowed from Once Upon a time in the West and The Good the Bad and The Ugly, making Sholay the ultimate `tandoori' western. Social inequalities, friendship, pride and revenge are its main ingredients. Although this means that it lacks any originality, the colourful script (delivered with force and conviction) and the distinct charm gives Sholay that extra factor other Bollywood films don't have. It also has a strong emotional element to it which is a key factor in Hindi films, and will go down well with the fans. It made a star out of Amitabh Bachchan, who is now regarded as the `Marlon Brando' of Indian cinema. Sholay is widely regarded as the greatest Bollywood film of all time. Although this is debatable, it certainly is the most famous, quoted, and iconic.

Sholay - the greatest Bollywood film of all time - brought together the acting talents of some of the biggest stars in Bollywood at that time. The two male leads, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, were already hugely popular. Amitabh Bhachchan had just made his big breakthrough the previous year (1974) with Zanjeer. Dharmendra was already well established and had starred in the box office smash hit Yaadon Ki Baaraat (a film which sadly doesn't get very many mentions when talking of classics). These two are supported in the film by Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjad Khan making his onscreen debut as the menacing villain Gabbar Singh. This film is to Bollywood what Star Wars is to Hollywood - the greatest film of all time. It set a new standard for others which has never really been equalled since its opening in August 1975. It ran for five consecutive years to packed cinema houses in India.
