Q: what's the smalles diameter this would work on?

I have used mine on saplings as small as 1" in diameter, though results are better on diameters from 1 1/2" up to the maximum size it can grip..

Q: I have a 58hp turbo diesel jd - is this too much power for the grubber? should i go with a heavier duty model?

I use mine with a 50 horse Mahindra with no problems. The grubber is very sturdy; I seriously doubt your JD will overpower it.

Q: can I use this on stumps that are only 4 or 5 inches tall, some of the trees have already been cut down and there are only stumps left too big to mow?

You can depending on the species of tree, age and diameter of the stump. Some species have smooth, bark, and if the stump is green, the grubber teeth may have a hard time getting sufficient bite and slide off. 4-5 inches height is minimally sufficient, but it's more dependent on the diameter of stump you're trying to remove. I don't recall the specs, but anything larger than 3 or 4 inches in diameter, I'd go with the larger model grubber.
