When my 3rd fitbit broke...
I had two fitbit charge, and then I bought the versa the week it came out when my fitbit had broken a few weeks earlier. When my versa broke - I knew one thing - I was done if with fitbit if I could get my data off their system. I worked the data problem out and thought I would just buy the new iwatch that came out a few weeks before. The iwatch 5 seemed to have worked out many of the earlier issues or limitations and it seemed like a no brainer until my son in college told me that you had to charge them every night...what? How do I track sleep? That is a pain, after the fit bit I removed my clock radio and keep my watch on virtually 24 hours a day. Well back to the web for research. My dogs are on the garmin alpha 100 system, so I looked at garmin and noted that I could track my dogs with the Fenix 6, but as I read I just wasn't sure - the model I was looking at with the sapphire bezel was $900 give or take. Back to the iPhone, back to the garmin, even back to the fitbit website. Then amazon showed me this watch (Fenix 5x sapphire) - while not used to buying anything but bleeding edge tech since I was in high school this was not only out of character it seemed stupid. but then I looked at the price and thought I would much rather waste $450 than twice that. I liked the bigger size and the battery life is more than a week with everything on - and I can track my dogs on my wrist! I have waited 6 weeks to review the watch though I pretty much knew I loved it the second day (when I finally decided I needed to sit down and actually read the manual). This watch does everything - it is big but not awkward but also means I can see the time without readers! The battery life is just awesome I actually think it is twice as good as my versa and the Fenix doesn't suck for everything else like the versa (another story though). I do know this, my next watch will be a Fenix and it will be a sapphire - as rough as I am on watches sapphire bezels are a must. Whether it is Fenix 8, 7, or 6 I really don't know - but I am happy with my sport watch for the first time in way over a year. Aside from all the other compliments I can throw at it, the watch updates better than fitbit, is far more accurate - the pulse coincides perfectly with my wifes pulse-ox meter. The data tells me much more about my day. The only thing I will miss is when I would win an award like the Chinese wall or the length a penguin walks for something, but unfortunately I have won so many of those, new ones only come about once a year. Garmin reminds me a pro tool and fitbit reminds me of a DIY'er model. Garmin is clearly head and shoulders above fitbit for serious training metrics - and while I don't need that level of excellence the precision and usefulness are absolutely a positive. There is nothing worse than data that really isn't accurate. I like the band and the styling, but that is just icing on the cake. The display options are extensive and based on your needs I promise that you can find not one that works but the perfect watch face. The apps actually work and don't just crash like my experience on fitbit and this watch keeps perfect time without syncing with your phone every week. I just could not be happier. Great Hiking gadget, with much more to offer than just hiking
So i bought this more for hiking and snowboarding purposes (as well as the gym), but mainly because of the map feature on here. I have yet to try it out snowboarding, but myself & my wife did hit a few of the national parks in Utah recently and I found it brilliant. Firstly we had been hiking in one of the canyons around capital reef national park, Utah, and we had ventured off our trail and I was able to use the "Back to Start" function to get us back to our car, and it worked a treat. It did tell me a few times that i was off course, but that was because i was a few feet away from the exact path i took or i was taking a small short cut. Also, in the Canyon, especially when it got narrow, i did lose the GPS signal, but it quickly came back. People do mention the battery life, and i have to agree it was brilliant. After coming from a fitbit blaze when i had to charge every 2nd /3rd day, this shines head & shoulders above. As i mentioned earlier i took this on a hiking trip, i had hit 3 national parks for 3 days straight using the GPS function on each of my 5-6hr hikes. Little did i realize when i left for my trip was, that i forgot the charging cable. So 3 hrs into my final days hiking (and after hiking approximately 12hrs in the last 2 days), the watch told me i was running low on battery. At this point i switched off the hiking activity so it would be on the watch mode, then soon after, the power saving function kicked in. At this point my fitbit would have been getting ready to switch off completely, but not this guy. I had 3hrs of a hike left and 2 days before i arrived home from my trip, where this could be reunited with the charging cable, and guess what, by the time i arrived home 2 days later this was still going. I may have had only 3% battery life left, but after 15 hrs of hiking, with the GPS maps going, and wearing the watch for 6 days, i think that this is good going. This may be expensive, but personally, functions like the GPS (which doesn't need a phone signal) and the 'back to start' function, if running, hiking, biking, skiing or snowboarding will be beneficial for outdoor people everywhere. I will go as far to say that i think this may even be life saving if you are the type of person who has got lost on trails before. One thing to keep in mind for those who have a partner with the similar frame of mind as my wife, she figured this to be similar a GPS for your car and cant understand why i spent so much money on something like this if you cant use it like your car or phone GPS. With so much functions packed into this, who knows maybe it can do that on here, but if i want a GPS for my car, i will use my phone or car GPS. In conclusion, this is packed full of functions i haven't even discovered yet. I love the battery life, the map, the fact its waterproof and load of other activities it has on here for the things like the gym, and as an outdoors individual i see it as a worth while investment.

Needed a device to track my road cycling and summer dinghy race sailing. The Fenix 5S fitted both requirements. I do not use it to navigate by maps but long battery life is very important for 8 hour plus days in the saddle. This is why the 5S is preferred to the 5X. For cycling the watch connects immediately to my Stages power meter and Garmin HR monitor. For sailing the waterproof and rugged capabilities are essential and Boat mode works well. All tracks are recorded in Garmin Connect. I prefer a smaller size watch and this 42mm model is perfect for me

Really glad I went for a refurbished Fenix, not a mark on it & would describe it as new. It's probably all most people will ever need regarding a activity watch. Bought some none genuine straps coloured strips from Amazon which were half the price of Garmin's.

I bought this watch January 4th, I was waiting to use it few months before rating and commenting on it. This is a long review but still, at least I can share some info ! What an amazing watch!! I trail run 100 to 120kms/month since a year now and I was using a SmartWatch (Huawei Sport Watch 2) until I investigated and read a lot about those Garmin devices and finally bought one ! I'm SO happy ! This is not a smartwatch at all, as a lot of comments, the purpose is statistics, accuracy and efficiency ! I read a lot of comments about the screen brightness etc and yes at the beginning I was "mm yeah not as clear as I was expecting" of course : switching from a smartwatch....not the same purpose at all ! but this is an outside robust adventure watch, not something you wear just to "duplicate" your smartphone screen !! It's fully functional and easy to read in the worst conditions ! (winter trail @ -25c in the evening or under the rain or in a very bright sunny day) Sapphire glass is a must have if you wear it everyday, I mean, I hit the watch badly several times, not a scratch ! no needs for a screen protector AT ALL ! Accuracy is A1, I use GPS and GLONASS, it's just perfect while into the woods or out of range for an usual GPS signal. It takes only few seconds to receive GPS signal. Altimeter, barometer and compass are very efficient too. Physiological metrics includes VO2 max estimate (don't work on trail mode, only running, to keep the accuracy at the maximum) lactate threshold (requires the heart-rate chest strap) race predictor, recovery advisor and performance indicator. LiveTrack is super convenient since I'm alone into the wild running, my wife can track my run and live locate me on the map. Battery life depends on the use : as a "watch" it's an easy 2 weeks capacity, the more you add widget, tracking options, live heart rate reading etc etc I can say around 10 to 12 days, but if you run, walk as mush as I do and wear it 24h/day (btw sleep tracking is very cool and accurate too) it will last 7 to 10 days. Hear rate is pretty accurate to, I increase the precision by adding a chest strap (Garmin HRM) and I love the stats with this one : vertical ratio, oscillation, ground impact balance and duration, HRSS...a nice useful add-on ! The settings are amazing and I use maybe 70% of the capacity of the watch now, there's a S**** load of options and setup, take the time to navigate among them, the manual user online is WOW. You can personalized almost everything. The only thing missing was music control for Spotify (not the app, only control) it was only compatible with Google Music : since the last update I can now control my Spotify app on my cell :-) (play, pause, volume, skip, song info) BTW the bluetooth range is amazing !! around +/- 40m (130ft) in my condo Talking about apps : Garmin Connect is amazing, Connect IQ store is ok, again this is not the main purpose... update are easy, connection to your computer too, Garmin Express works like a charm. (I'm using it on a Mac) I cannot comment on the golf, swimming and cycling use since I'm just trail running, walking and hiking. Honestly I don't have any bad comments, except even if it's the 51mm one, the screen on itself is a bit small, let's say 29mm reading screen, some apps are sometimes offset (Xstretch for example) But once again, if you're expecting a watch as an iWatch, a Samsung or other SmartWatch displaying useless features you already have on your phone : this is not for you. BTW : This is not touch screen. This is made for athletes, sportsmen with real need of sports use, stats, data and so on. Add-on : 3 different wristband, Garmin HRM, dust cap on the connector, charging stand. (bought on Amazon)
