How do you fix them in the ground

Dig a small narrow trench a couple of inches deep and drop it in. I have a tool (Wolf Garten LBM 7 cm Multi-Change Small Cultiweeder) which is perfect for hooking out a narrow band of dirt. Then backfill the space remaining and stomp it down to firm them up. Don't try filling behind them with too much dirt as over time they will fall out of line - but you can use a plastic 'wall' against the inside of them to spread the load of dirt put behind them and stop it pushing out the weaker strips (something like 'Cellfast lawn edging smooth garden fence flower bed edging mowing edge garden pallisade, brown). Also helps slow down the rotting of them.
