Haven't Read Valiant? This is a Good Place to Start
I know it's a bit hip to ride the bandwagon of comics currently of those to suggest reading something outside of the Big Two (Marvel/DC), but I have to admit, a great deal of refreshing comics are coming out of other companies. Image and Dark Horse are knocking it out of the park as I type this. Nothing against the Big Two, seeing as I am a massive DC person --just check most of my reviews on DC--, and both Marvel/DC are putting out great stuff to be fair. But I think I am joining the hip crowd of those other comic companies, seeing as I am hooked on Valiant now, thanks to dabbling in X-O Manowar and Quantum & Woody. Does Harbinger get a passing grade as well? Oh very much so!HARBINGER DELUXE EDITION VOL.1 collects #0-14 of the series that makes up the first three trades Harbinger Volume 1: Omega Rising TP (Issues 1 - 5) Harbinger Volume 2: Renegades TP (Issues 6 - 10) Harbinger Volume 3: Harbinger Wars TP (Issues 0, 11 - 14)Peter Stanchek has been running from the law for years trying to suppress his abilities that haunt him. Peter finally gets caught by an organization called Harbinger and finds out his powers are that of a psychic. He can read minds, create force fields, lift objects, and many other things he never knew possible. The Harbinger organization is lead by Toyo Harada, a wealthy businessman and the world's most powerful psychic that wants Peter to join his group that has numerous Harbingers with psychic abilities just like Peter. But something goes awry and Peter see's the organization has an evil group with Harada at the helm. So Peter goes about the country, recruiting other psychics to help him battle Harada's inevitable reign on the world.Writer Joshua Dysart keeps a majority of the classic Harbinger storyline and characters intact, but adds a modern day touch of workmanship. Character and world building are told through dynamic action from Peter taking on Harada's corporation, while the slower moments give insight on the characters inner turmoils. So although this is an action heavy series (it and X-O Manowar), Dysart still finds ways to flesh out the cast. All the characters have troubled past, so when we do get to know them, including Harada's own origins, we do sympathize with what the characters are doing. This makes it where we get behind our heroes, yet understand that even Harada is trying to the right thing even if he is the antagonist. This is what makes Harbinger a great read.Art duties are mostly handled by Khari Evans and Trevor Hairsine that both make detailed action and destruction when need be, while showcasing emotions vividly. The fill-in artist Mico Suayan, Barry Kitson, Phil Briones, Lee Garbett, Pere Perez, and Matthew Clark do commendable work.I usually add some possible negative feedback on everything I review, but I did not find much that might bother readers. Maybe the character of Kris Hathaway who does seem to be a little too angry to the point of annoyance once in a while (even hypocritical). And the buildup for the confrontation of the Harbinger Wars won't happen until next volume. But again, I didn't find any faults consider the oversized format and additional content for the price you are getting. So yeah, HARBINGER DELUXE EDITION VOL.1 is another reason why so many are praising the Valiant line of comics and I am not afraid to see why. It's got great storytelling, compelling characters, plenty of action, lovely art, and all at a reasonable price in this deluxe edition format. I definitely will pick up the next wave of deluxe hardcovers in the future like Bloodshot Deluxe Edition Book 1 HC and Archer & Armstrong Deluxe Edition Book 1 HC . New readers should give this a try.

Like the X-men except how they used to be, you know when it was good
So I have not written one review for a product on amazon ever, and I have shopped here and shopped here, but this was the first time a product was so excellent and so enjoyable that I just had to give it a review (plus it was time to help people thinking about purchasing). Well if you are a fan of superhero books and like them a touch dark, but not overwhelming black this is the series for you. If you are tired of the same old heroes, the same old cliches, death meaning nothing, and overstacked muscled supermen well this is the series for you. I have read a lot of Valiant relaunch and while everything I have read has been great, Harbinger stands above them all. The character of Toyo Harada is a very interesting one, certainly not a good person, but not a totally evil one either. He see the things that others do not, and while he comes to some very wrong conclusions, he is not motivated by only self interest. Faith is also a wonderful character that does incredible things in ways that traditional heroes just don't do. She is a bit hard to explain because she is so well written that to try and summarize her would be difficult without taking something away from her character. Sting and Chris also have interesting arcs and Torque is funny. The art is also excellent, and while you probably have to get Harbinger wars TPB to go with this, that is also worth it as well, as is the rest of the line. I am an older comic book reader and if you are looking for something that has a certain maturity about it that the big two do not, this book is for you.

Great Series--Great Edition!
The book itself is beautiful and well laid-out. The interior art is great and the story...well, if you haven't read the new modern Harbinger yet then you are really only hurting yourself. In summary, a young cast of would-be superheroes who are more realistic in origin than their brand-name contemporaries. The big-bad isn't a super-villain; in fact, he may actually be more of a hero than our titular character and allies. The characters are believable, flawed, and engaging. This world actually feels possible. For the record, I am a monthly subscriber to Harbinger as well as most of Valiant's other series. I picked this up in addition to my other copies as this is one of my favorite ongoing series from the last couple years. This book is well-bound/sturdy, made of high-quality materials, and pretty. The only major negative I can speak to at this point, is that now I have to wait until the next edition is available.

READ to be an informed buyer
I really loved this ongoing, especially the middle of three arcs. But be advised! The third arc is part of a crossover. So there will be a lot that will seem oddly underdeveloped. From what I've heard from other Valiant fans, it may be best to buy the Harbinger Wars Deluxe edition to get all the parts of the crossover in order, and get the other two arcs as smaller trade paperbacks. The back third of this book still works if you're looking to save money and aren't interested in the larger crossover, to be clear, but the story still reads as though there is something bigger/more important going on that you aren't focused on.

Valiant Entertainment
Empfehlung an alle Comicfans.
