Good Euro style game that is difficult to learn but fun to play
I will admit, that after 1.5 attempts to play this game with my wife, we almost gave up on it forever to just play Orleans. I am glad that we stuck with it. We felt that the rule book was hard to follow and left some things ambiguous the first couple of times we tried to learn to play. Perhaps some things were lost in translation from French to English. But with determination we figured out how to play and have played several times now. I don't know how the game plays with 3 or 4 players, but we are eager to try it sometime. With two players it is enjoyable enough. The game mechanics are actually not hard (the confusing rule book, not withstanding) but it feels like there is a fair amount of depth and strategy to this game. Perhaps, since we are "stupid Americans" and like the rules to spell things out for us. There are definitely subtitles and nuanced results of game mechanics that become apparent after a few plays. You always feel like you had a turn or two more to accomplish all that you want to.My wife and I actually ended up playing this game more often than Orleans (another medieval French city game) even though the latter game was easier to learn to play. This has a lot to do with bit count. Orleans has a lot more bits in it so it's easier to jump into a game of Troyes. One last thing, my copy came with some bits missing. Fortunately, I requested replacement parts and got them in the mail literally 2 weeks before Asmodee NA announced their new policy of not providing replacement parts anymore. This egregious policy means that, if you buy this game here on Amazon, and it's missing parts, you will have to ship it back so that Amazon can send you a whole new copy of the game. Just for your information...Bottom line: This is a really well implemented Euro style game that is fun to play, but could use a better written rulebook. Also, you better hope your copy comes with all the included bits, or you are going to go through a hassle of waiting extra long before you get to play this game (since you have to ship it back and wait for it to get sent out again).

Classic Euro, yet Nothing like It
Great game. Hit me square on the nose. For me, it's the perfect balance of everything I look for in a non-perfect information euro. One caveat, while this one requires basic arithmetic to get by, this can result in a dry experience despite the more thematic expressions and event scenarios. However, there is a lot of player interaction and changes which adds just enough chaos to not require long-term accounting, rather merging your investments into the current state to dominate tight situations. Sometimes they're instantly gratifying and obvious other times they're more subtle and require larger cerebral offerings. Component quality seems fine but the cards are super thin and feel like paper. First thing I did was sleeve them. Other cardboard pieces are moderately thick. I've seen heftier but I'm fine with it. Lots of wood without blemishes and nice rules and bonus cards!

I like Eurogames that are a bit mean :)
This is one of my favorite games because it has a great balance of strategy, interaction, and a small bit of luck. You can take other people's dice, push people off spots, and there's always variety from the different cards each game. I also love the artwork. Check out Hansa Teutonica for another great Eurogame!

Dicey Good Time if You Don't Mind People Messing With Your Best Laid Plans
Don’t let the dry medieval French theme or weightiness dissuade you, once you understand all the moving pieces it is such an incredible game, esp at higher player counts, but only if you enjoy player interaction. The cooperative aspect of defending the castle coupled with the unique dice drafting, meeple (re)placement and action selection mechanics means every single turn you’ll be interacting with most if not all of the other players. If you don’t enjoy player interaction or having your best laid plans disrupted then I’d steer clear of this one. Troyes is a brain melter, but in such a wonderful way. It’s so well designed no matter which events or cards come out the scores are always very close. Haven’t tried the Ladies expansion yet, but everything I read says it is essential.

Classic euro
Anyone reading this knows the reputation this game has. Highly reccomended if you enjoy euros with dice mitigation(ie Castles of Burgundy). This is considered a classic for a reason.

highly recommend.
Highly in depth strategy that I have only barely scratched the surface. Played with some friends and got absolutely annihilated. Definitely a lot to think about and every game is going to feel different with all of the cards that may come out during each game. Highly, highly recommend.
