The Nation s Favourite bedtime story is being brought to life in an all star beautiful adaptation of the best-selling book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The Guffalo debuts on BBC One this Christmas and comes to DVD in time for Easter 2010. The film's all-star voice cast features Robbie Coltrane as the Gruffalo; Helena Bonham Carter as the narrator; Rob Brydon as the Snake; James Corden as the Mouse; John Hurt as the Owl and Tom Wilkinson as the Fox. The Gruffalo tells the magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk through the woods in search of a nut. Encountering three predators who all wish to eat him a fox, an owl and a snake the plucky mouse has to use his wits to survive, creating an imaginary monster who then turns out to be only too real.

True to the book
Having read The Gruffalo to my son most days (it is a firm favourite of his), I was so excited to see this on BBC over Christmas. It didn't disappoint. True to the book, with some gorgeous animation and well-selected celebrity voices, it really is a joy. I was really pleased to see that it was coming on DVD (which arrived this morning) because it is lovely to watch, not just for children, but adults too.The story revolves around a clever - but appetising - little mouse. Off in search of a tasty nut, he goes for a stroll through a deep, dark wood, meeting several characters who want to eat him. He tells them of a Gruffalo - a terrifying creature, who will eat them all ... little do they know that this creature exists only in the imagination of the little mouse. Or does he?So much fun, the book and the DVD are fantastic. At a nice length of 30 minutes, it's not of a length that would cause young children to lose interest, and is so beautifully done that it will hold the attention of even the most cynical adults.Well worth it's 5 stars!

Magical veiwing for all
We love the original Gruffalo book in our household and so when we saw this was going to be aired on Christmas Day (and later repeated on BBC3 on Boxing Day), we just had to watch it. And we weren't disappointed. In fact I can honestly, hand-on-heart say that this 30 minute animation is the best thing I've seen on TV all year.It was just magical in both the way the book has been so faithfully animated (not Disneyfied thank goodness!), with beautiful soundtrack too and it kept both my husband and I entranced from start to finish. Sadly my little boy (18months) was in bed already, so I'm thrilled to see that it's being released on DVD.If you haven't seen it yet, then do catch it on BBC's iplayer while it is available (a week or so?) but if you're shopping once it's been removed, then don't hesitate to buy this on DVD! If you love the book, you won't regret it.

A great interpretation of this classic tale.
Our grandchildren are very familiar with the story of the Gruffalo in book form so this seemed like a promising DVD to entertain them on a Sunday afternoon. The feature is approximately 25 minutes long, which is an ideal length to maintain their interest at ages 3 and 5. The scary bits are not too scary and they just nestle a little closer to mum, dad or grandparent! The visual impact of the deep, dark wood and the characters draw you into the story as if you were there. This is enhanced by the audio which washes over you so that you barely notice it, it is so appropriate. The all star voice cast is excellent and leads you to believe that it is the characters themselves who are talking rather than famous actors - just as it should be. Yes, they were both captivated for the full 25 minutes! The extras include the "Making of the Documentary", a photo gallery and optional subtitles.Thoroughly recommended.

The Gruffalo - hours of fun
My Wife and I bought this DVD for our 2 and a half year old Girl at Christmas and She has not stopped watching it since , she loves it and My Wife and me can see why as we really enjoy it too , it is a charming little story, a Mouse goes for a walk and sees a nut and in his trek to the tree to get more nuts runs across several predators and to scare them off makes up a creature he is meeting - the Gruffalo only to run into the Gruffalo himself .The animation is excellent the animals are very well designed and it is most amusing , the voice actors chosen are excellent and it is all round very very funny ,even the music score it is well done and works excellently , watching it over and over I see things I did not notice the first time around that make me smile agian and again an excellent buy and will keep your little ones and big ones amused for ages .

My children love it
I'm struggling how to rate this DVD: with children or with adult eyes?My son knew it from school already but he wanted it dearly for Christmas so Santa brought it and he loves it very much, clearly 5 stars here.My adult eyes do see a couple of negative points here though: in order to give the film length some scenes seem a little stretched and the flow of the rhymes of the original book is sacrificed for additional (words free) scenes. And the ratio of duration / price is also a weak point, for the price one can get a full 90min film normally. On the other hand I think the quality is excellent, I don't have an issue with the film being 3D vs. book 2D, and what I appreciated most was that the flow of the scenes is so smooth, so non-american-multiple-action-per-second-ish, a real eye pleaser for our family.

Gruffalo DVD
I bought this DVD for my two year old daughter after renting it out from our local library. She was given the book for her second birthday and loved it straight away, (So did mum and Dad!). Over the week that we rented this film it was viewed in excess of 9 times! So we decided to purchase a copy of our own.Amazon was, as always, the cheapest option with free postage and packing. As we knew the product before we ordered it I can't comment on the information offered about this product but I can say how fantastic it is! If like us you love the story, this dvd won't dissapoint you. It is beuatifully presented with an all star cast for the voice overs. It lasts approximately 25 minutes, which is a perfect length for any pre- school viewers but can be enjoyed by any age group. The BBC has produced a truely brillant version of this excellent story at very high standard.Highly recommened product!!!
