Does it have any strong odour when new?

Mine had an incredibly strong odor - very strong chemical smell

Is the gel in the mouse pad firmish or very soft.

Really soft, collapses with minimal pressure.

For thoes that bought the gel mouse mat, whats it like. Is it really a silky feeling material etc

Its not gel its foam and its not silky

Can you wash this item if it gets dirty?

I would not put it in the washing machine but have always sponged mine off if they get dirty. I find this a really comfortable wrist rest as I am a Medical Secretary and spend at least 7 hours a day in front of a computer using this.
