For a gas fireplace, why can't a dryer vent cover be used instead?

Fireplace vent draw the air into the house, whereas dryer vents push air out of the house and most have swinging closures that prevent the air from going into the house. A dryer vent would work if the closure was removed allowing the air to be drawn into the house.
