Q: would this be any good for digging drainage holes as have problems with flooding at one side of my garden?

Hi Emma, We have been delighted with this product which is very strong. I am sure it would be useful for the job as it slices through the ground easily etc. The spade isn't wide but it is long so you get a good depth with it. It's 1.1metres long, with the blade 0.4metres long, which makes it a fairly standard length from handle to blade so that you use it as you would a standard spade, it's just that it cuts a more precise and deeper hole than a standard spade and is very good to use for digging post holes and holes to plant trees. It's also a good weight to drive down into the soil and makes the digging easier.

Q: Is this suitable for digging a wider trench for a garden wall footing or is it just for digging fence post holes, cable trenches and smaller trenches?

Assuming you were building a 9" wall this would be fine if you are banging through hard and / or difficult ground, otherwise I'd stick to something with a larger shovel area, to make removal of the diggings out from the trench easier, if it's a easy dig.

Q: I have a spike that would not go further. Would I be able to dig around it with this spade? Thank you

If you have a layer of dense stone or concrete, this spade will likely not dig through it, but if you can pour some water into the hole and soften the hard ground that may be hard clay or clay-based, then you will stand a chance of digging further with this spade.
