Excellent Book, Highly Recommended
Excellent book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has a difficult relationship with their mother. I had read Susan's other book first 'Toxic Parents', but needed to understand my relationship with my own mother a bit better so bought this book. I am so pleased that I did, to read that other women are also struggling to understand why they have such a difficult relationship with their mothers, is very empowering. This is such a taboo subject and no one wants to talk about it, so to have a book full of other women's stories who can resonate with my own has been very healing. The books offers very practical advice, how to enact boundaries, what battles to fight, which to walk away from. But most of all, the message is that as a child of a woman who was unable or unwilling to bond with you, it's not your fault. It's taken many years to finally get that message but now I have I want other women to know that it's possible to move on in your life and be proud of who you are.

Excellent book
A very good read for any daughter of a difficult mother. The book is divided into two parts. The first describes in four categories the types of narcissistic Mothers. I believe that you have to allow overlapping characteristics from one category to the other. The description of narcissistic Mother personality in the first part is spot one for me. The second part concentrates on the part of recovering from the emotional pain and stigma that growning up with an unloved mother that stays with you. I do like the concept of trying to remember, relive and remove the painful experiences from your childhood. The best thing about this book is like having a phycologist helping you to your road of recovering. Highly recommended it.

A narcissistic mother and how to deal with it
If I hadn't read 10 books Before about narcissism, the consequences and what your options are to move forward in Life I Think this would had been a very good book to start with. It describes a narcissistic behaviour and then at the end of the book gives you the alternatives. What I also appreciated is the risen fact of how tabu it is to say it is your mother you have cut off all your Contact with. It is still more acceptable ifr you say it is your father, but it seems people don t have the knowledgde or don't want to understandthat also mothers can psychologically absue you and make your Life hell. I also appreciated the fact that she does tell you that sometimes the only way to survive is to cut off completely and not only that the book also describes the reactions from the surroundings which not Always are described in other books. The only thing that I have found through this journey is that it is Always about mothers and daughters, we are in the situation where we have encountered the son of a narcisstistic mother

Very Good
A very good comprehensive book on a very much misunderstood dilema for many women. It covers as follows... questioning your mothers love, the severely narcissistic mother, overly enmeshed mother(smothering),control freak mothers ,mothers who need mothering and mothers who neglect, betray and abuse their children. The severely narcissistic mother i could relate to from my own experience,i wish i had found books like this years ago and saved myself alot of heartache, thankyou Susan.More books like this are needed especially with so many therapists lacking in this field.

Brilliant! Sadly accurate but so empowering ...
BRILLIANT! BUY IT! I wish I had read this 30 years ago - oh how I wish. You can ditch all the other self help books if your problem is a sad and difficult relationship with your mum, whom you have spent your life trying to win approval and love from - THIS IS YOUR BOOK!

Perfect aid to understanding our uncomfortable feelings and thoughts
The author definitely knows what she's talking about and it often feels like she's standing by my side holding my hand while she talks. Her years of experience are obvious through this lecture.I wish I read this book 10 years ago. I cannot rate it high enough on here, but I can definitely recommend it to anyone trying to understand themselves and how the connections formed with their carers shaped their thoughts and behaviour! This book along therapy helped me overcome guilt and shame.
