Sketching from the Imagination: Characters

This is a FAT book with a lot of different art styles and pictures from each artist, printed in good quality with a massive range of artists and character poses. As someone learning to simplify and stylise, I really love it. The only thing that could make it potentially less useful is that the writing isn’t especially instructive about the drawing itself, more each artist’s take on developing the characters and selecting a design conceptually for the respective projects. That said, I didn’t expect this book to teach me to draw, and the number of pictures I can copy to practice techniques and reference for my own designs is still both practical and educational. I’m also really pleased with the diverse body types and races shown, and the way women are represented. Very few anatomically improbable women doing nothing but looking nice with nothing on, and the few naked-ish women seem to be mermaids or goddesses and pretty empowered. I know a lot of art books get given to kids and the way women are sexualised isn’t often handled this well- I wouldn’t hesitate gifting this to any age. Will follow up on this publisher in future!

I use this book when I’m feeling uninspired and it always helps. The pictures are great quality and I love the descriptions of the artists as well, and the advice. The selection artists is very diverse so it is full of different art styles and mediums. I will definitely be buying more in the series.

As someone who collects artbooks, this one is a real gem. It's hard to find the expressive sketches of artists in their artbooks, so finding a whole collection from such a wide variety of artists was great. Quality of the book itself is high and while those who are looking for tutorial types books might not get the sort of in-depth info they'd need, there's a nice amount of text giving a little info on the imagery.

I saw this book while browsing flip through videos on youtube. I am not disappointed at all. I bought it to give me some sort of inspiration. A range of artist are featured in this book with their own tips and interviews. Its a nice book to have.

Too many cartoon images for me, not enough realistic images.

This book has a wealth of artists sharing a variety of their art styles, processes and insights accompanied by abundance of artwork that’ll definitely grab your attention! A great book to have on your book shelf whenever you’re looking for inspiration!

I really adore this series of books. Very inspirational and handy for reference when I am designing or sketching in my spare time. I'd like to see them do even more of these. Another great addition to the collection.

Ich besitze mittlerweile mehrere Bücher dieser Serie und bin immer wieder fasziniert von den unterschiedlichen Stilen der Künstlern. Es ist sehr interessant nachzulesen welche Materialien und Techniken verwendet werden. Hier finde ich außerdem immer wieder Inspiration beim Durchblättern für eigene Projekte oder probiere auch mal andere Sachen aus.

50 artistas en 300 hojas con 50 estilos distintos de diseñar personajes. Es un brainstorming magnifico para sacar ideas, ver trazos muy diferentes y darte cuenta de la variedad de opciones de diseño que hay para crear personajes con personalidad que te dejen atrapado en una hoja o en una pantalla... Personalmente junto con el de sci-fi es el que mas me gusta de los cuatro que tengo. Y que nadie se lleve a engaño, si lo que quieres es un libro-tutorial que te enseñe a dibujar characters este no es tu libro.

Acquistato come usato ma in ottime condizioni. Manuale molto utile per vedere diversi stili d’illustrazione del genere.

Cent percent this is a valuable book for illustrators and artists alike. It contains collective information and inspirational tidbits from well known illustrators. This includes their work methods, what inspires them, art materials they use, and valuable tips and experiences. The book is full of art and progressive sketches. Pages are of superior quality and the book is thick. It's a must have for art inspiration and motivation for all artists. Yes, it's expensive but well worth every penny.
