Surprisingly Good
I just made some chicken fried rice to test this and it was truly excellent, and a little surprising. When you taste this neat, it's not very strong and tastes more sweet than savoury, but in the food it tastes salty and quite potent - a little goes a long way.

Great MSG
If you think MSG is wrong, go do your research and stop listening to hoaxes / old wives tales. It adds an umami taste to Asian food. It's great for stir fry rice and other Asian dishes. And don't believe that rubbish that MSG is bad for you. It's no different to salt.

But in the context of your question no it is not 'salt', which is sodium chloride. When used in cooking reduce the normal salt by half and add, depending on quantity of food, half to one teaspoon of MSG. This has the effect of increasing the perceived flavour of the food. I use it in cheese sauces to make them taste cheesier, also in soups and stews to increase meaty flavour. I hope this helps.
