Q: Would this fit an 11 year old child, and is it made as the picture suggests (i.e. does it have a mesh back like many of the other caps)?

I purchased for a 9 yeah old and it needed to be made smaller for him so I would say yes as it has an adjustable strap on the back.

Q: does this fit an adult? Head size approximately 58cm?

I would say no, it’s more a child size. My son is 10 years old and would say a small head and it fits him perfectly.

Q: Is this machine washable?

I'm afraid there is no care label on the product I received and I have never tried, so I'm afraid I cannot answer.
