Q: How do I know what is the best sized oven for me?

12 inch is usually considered the standard size for dinners, but I guess if you were only cooking for two people the 10 inch would do fine. We have several 12 inch that we use for dinners, and a 10 inch we cook dessert in. We also have a large 14 inch for when we have a large group to cook for like a family gathering. You can put a whole chicken into a 12 inch but just a few pieces of chicken into a 10 inch. If you want to cook bread or rolls, you'll need the room of the 12 inch. The beauty of the Dutch oven is you can stack them while cooking so you can use a 12 inch for the main course, another for dinner rolls, and top it off with a 10 inch for dessert. Be careful not to confuse quart size with inches. Lodge typically measures by size in inches, while Camp Chef ovens are deeper and measure by quarts. I've noticed the deeper Camp Chefs take more coals to get the same cook times, but they do hold more food. Lodge offers better quality, but Camp Chef includes a lid that can be flipped upside down and used as a griddle, which is handy if you'll be camping. I like both brands.

Lodge manufacturers all of their cast iron products here in the U.S., in Tennessee. The enameled Dutch ovens are made here but then sent to China for the enameled coating.

Q: What is the right size? No more than 4 people camping but 8 or so for-party. Bigger is better?

The 8 quart dutch oven will supply you with plenty enough food for a party of 8 and camping with 4. I have had alot of large meals come out of my 8 quart oven. I also have two 12 quart dutch ovens and just 1 of the ovens will feed a small army. I have fed 3 familys ( 10 people ) at the same time with the 8 quart oven. I started out makeing my best meals with my old 8 quart. Hope this helps !!!
